IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instantaneous noodles.

Overall, the process contains eight main stages, beginning with the storage of flours and ends with the labeling and sealing the noodles cups.

At the first stage, flour is stored in large tanks before it is taken to the process of mixer with water and oil. After that the ingredients make the dough sheets which passed through a series of rollers so that the dough strips can be made in the fouth stage.

In the fifth stage, the dough strips are shaped in the form of noodles discs. Once formed, the noodles discs are cooked in oil and dried after that to remove the excess and transform it into cups. Vegetables and spices also added to enhave the flavor. Then come the final stage, label and seal the cups to dispatch for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having eight stages and give a general start-to-finish overview, which addresses the main purpose of the task. However, some key details are incomplete or inaccurate: the noodles are not transformed into cups during cooking and drying; rather, the cooked discs continue to a later stage where cups, vegetables and spices are added. The account also omits the rollers that form the dough sheets and the final emergence of sealed cups on a conveyor. The overview could describe the process more precisely, and several stages need fuller reporting. The response is also 8 words below the required 150-word minimum. Add accurate detail about the later packaging stages and ensure the response meets the stated length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence, moving from an overview to the early production stages and then to cooking and packaging. Time markers such as “At the first stage,” “After that,” and “In the fifth stage” help the reader follow the process. This coherent overall organisation is a strength. However, some links are awkward or unclear: “Once formed, the noodles discs are cooked in oil and dried after that to remove the excess and transform it into cups” combines several steps and makes the reference of “it” uncertain. The final sentence also jumps quickly to dispatch. To strengthen progression, give each major phase a clear, accurate sentence and use referencing that makes the product at each stage explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “rollers,” “noodles discs,” and “label and seal,” so the reader can recognise the topic and follow much of the sequence. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “instantaneous noodles,” “the process of mixer,” and “enhav[e] the flavor.” “Flours” is also not the best form for the material shown, and “transform it into cups” misrepresents the process. These choices sometimes reduce precision. Aim for standard process collocations and accurate terms for each stage, such as mixing flour with water and oil, shaping noodle discs, and filling cups with seasonings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “rollers so that the dough strips can be made” and a time clause beginning “Once formed.” The sequence remains broadly understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “beginning with the storage of flours and ends” mixes grammatical forms; “which passed” should use a consistent tense and structure; and “Vegetables and spices also added” is missing a verb. “Then come the final stage” also has subject–verb agreement problems. Practise keeping the process description consistently in the present passive, and check that each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
