IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of how instant noodles are produced.
Overall, the process contains eight to nine activities through instant noodles are made.
The process starts with transferring the flour from Storage silos to a mixer through truck. After transferring the flour into the mixer, the water and oil are added, and the mixture is mixed. In next stages the mixture is converted into dough sheets by rollers. Followed by cutting the dough in strips called as dough strips the same strips are converted into noodles discs which undergoes cooking in oil and then dryed. In last stages, the vegetables and spices are added in the cups and lastly the cups are labelled and sealed when the cups are still on the conveyer belt. Lastly, after attaching labels to cups the noodles are sent ahead through conveyor belt.
In conclusion, total eight to nine steps/activities are involved to manufacture the instant nodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the diagram as a manufacturing process and describe its main sequence, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices before sealing. However, the overview is unclear: “eight to nine activities” is imprecise, and the conclusion repeats this rather than summarising the process’s key stages. There is also a factual error in saying flour is transferred “from Storage silos … through truck”; the diagram shows a truck delivering flour to the silos, then flour moving to the mixer. Some details are vague or inaccurate, such as how the cups are filled and the finished product emerges. A clearer overview and more precise reporting of the diagram would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows the general order of production, so readers can trace the process from flour storage to the finished cups. You also use basic sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “In next stages,” and “In last stages.” However, progression is weakened by the repeated conclusion, which adds no new information, and by several awkward transitions. “Followed by cutting the dough…” is a fragment rather than a smoothly connected step, while “Lastly” is used twice near the end. The overview and body are present, but the paragraphing and linking do not consistently guide the reader through the stages. Organise the description into a concise overview followed by clearly connected stages, using varied and accurate sequencing language.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “conveyor belt.” These terms help communicate the manufacturing stages, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “activities” is vague for process stages, “cutting the dough in strips” is less natural than “cutting the dough into strips,” and “sent ahead through conveyor belt” is awkward. There are also spelling errors in “dryed” and “nodles,” and “called as” is not idiomatic. Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling and common word combinations to make the description more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including passive forms such as “are added” and “are labelled and sealed,” which suit a process description. However, some sentence structures are faulty or incomplete. “Overall, the process contains eight to nine activities through instant noodles are made” has an incorrect clause construction; “Followed by cutting the dough…” is a fragment; and “which undergoes cooking” has an agreement problem because the subject is plural. There are also missing or incorrect articles and prepositions, as in “In next stages” and “into strips.” These errors do not prevent the reader from following the broad process, but they reduce control. Use complete sentences and check agreement and article use when describing each stage.
