IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the processes involved in instant noodles production

Overall, the process involves eight steps, starting from the storage of silos to label.

Step one involves the transfer of floor from the vehicle to the storage silos, from the storage silos, the floor is moved to the rollers, at the rollers, oil and water is introduced and are mixed simultanously with the floor. The mixture afterwards is transfered to the dough sheets, with the help of this machine, the mixture is straighened to formed a dough strips

Subseqently at stage five, the strips are converted into noodle discs using which is followed by the addition of cooking oil and drying. Next, they are transfered into cups where vegetables and spices are added. Next, following the introduction of vegetables and spices, then comes the sealing and labelling of the noodles.

Finally, once the noodles are lablle, they set set for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram as a manufacturing process and give an overview that it has eight steps, with a beginning and an end. Most of the later sequence is recognisable, including forming noodle discs, cooking and drying, adding vegetables and spices, and sealing and labelling. However, some stages are misreported or unclear: water and oil are added at the mixer, not at the rollers, and the dough is shaped into sheets before being cut into strips. The overview also says the process starts with “storage of silos,” rather than flour being delivered to the silos, and the final sale is not shown in the diagram. Covering these early stages more accurately and describing the full sequence clearly would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a broadly logical order and is divided into paragraphs, with sequencing expressions such as “Step one,” “Subsequently,” “Next,” and “Finally” helping the reader follow the process. The overall progression from flour storage to finished cups is apparent. However, some links are mechanical or confusing: “from the storage silos, the floor is moved to the rollers” does not clearly connect the mixer stage, while “Next, following the introduction … then comes” repeats the transition and makes the sequence cumbersome. The final paragraph is very brief and repeats the idea of labelling. Use clearer stage-to-stage links and group related steps into a more balanced progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “noodle discs,” and “sealing and labelling,” which helps convey the subject. However, the range and precision are limited, and several noticeable spelling or word-choice errors make parts harder to understand. For example, “floor” is used where the diagram shows “flour,” and “lablle” appears in the final paragraph. Phrases such as “the noodles are lablle” and “they set set for sale” are not natural descriptions of the final stage. Choose accurate process verbs and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe the noodles as being “labelled” and the finished cups as “ready for distribution.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to use both simple and more extended sentences, and the stages are generally expressed in the present tense. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction are noticeable. In “the mixture is transfered … to formed a dough strips,” the infinitive and article/plural pattern are incorrect; “oil and water is introduced and are mixed” also has inconsistent agreement. The opening overview lacks final punctuation, and “they set set for sale” is grammatically unclear. These issues sometimes make the process difficult to follow, although the intended meaning is often recoverable. Build accuracy by using consistent passive forms, such as “water and oil are added,” and checking each clause for a complete, correctly formed verb.
