IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The process diagram depicts the eight steps involved in producing instant noodles, tracing the process from flour storage to the final packaging stage.
Overall, producing and transporting instant noodles is an eight-stages process, which begins with storage and mixed with water and oil, and ends with noodles being filled into cups. During this stages, the noodles are shaped, cooked in oil, and combined with vegetables and spices.
In the initial stages, ingredients are combined and formed into noodles discs. The flour is transfered from truck to storage silos. Then that flour move into mixer, where water and oil is added. Once the raw materials are blended, it passes through a set of rotating rollers, to flatten the sheets and cut it into a strips. After this, strips are converted into a noodles discs.
The remaining stages, done with heat treatment and labeling and transporting. The noodles discs are cooked in oil and followed by heat for drying, and pass to the production line. After this stage has been completed, the dried noodles are placed into individual cups, where vegetables and spices are added to enhance the flavour, before the filled cups are sealed and labelled, completing the manufactuing cycle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear account of the process from flour delivery through to the finished cups, and your overview identifies the start, end, and several central transformations. The details about adding water and oil, forming sheets and strips, cooking and drying the discs, and adding vegetables and spices are grounded in the diagram. This covers the task well. However, a few stages are compressed or imprecisely described: the rollers flatten the dough into sheets before it is cut into strips, while the response makes these actions sound like one step. The final cups are labelled and sealed, but the account does not clearly mention that cups are introduced at the filling stage. Distinguishing these stages more precisely would make the report more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two chronological detail paragraphs. The progression from the initial preparation to the later cooking and packaging stages is easy to follow, and phrases such as “In the initial stages” and “The remaining stages” help signal the sequence. This is a clear overall structure. Some linking and reference could be more precise: “After this” is used for successive transitions, and “it” in “it passes through a set of rotating rollers” has an unclear reference because the sentence begins with plural “raw materials.” The overview also has a punctuation gap after “Overall,”. Use varied, accurate sequencing expressions and make each pronoun’s referent explicit to strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rotating rollers,” “dried,” “individual cups,” and “sealed and labelled.” These terms help communicate the main stages, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate choices. A few word forms and collocations reduce precision: “transfered” is misspelled, “manufactuing” is also misspelled, and “transporting” does not accurately describe the overall process. “Heat treatment” is less specific than the diagram’s cooking in oil and drying. Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling, especially in key technical terms. More accurate choices would make the description sound more controlled and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “where water and oil is added” and a time clause beginning “Once the raw materials are blended.” However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response and limit accuracy. Examples include “an eight-stages process,” “During this stages,” and “that flour move”; the sentence “The remaining stages, done with heat treatment…” is also incomplete. In “where water and oil is added,” the compound subject requires a plural verb. Review subject–verb agreement, singular and plural forms, and complete sentence structure. These corrections, alongside more consistently accurate complex sentences, would improve grammatical control.
