IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram demonstrates the process of instant noodles is produced.

Overall, the process consists of eight stages starting from the storage of silos and ending with labelling and sealing cups of instant noodles. It is divided into three phases making dough ,cooking it with oil, drying and adding vegetables and spices lastly labelling and sealing of the product.

Intially, in the first stage the flour is transported from truck and stored in storage silos. Following this, the flour is thorougly mixed with water and oil in a mixer machine in the second stage. Next in the third stage roller is operated to make the dough into flat dough sheets. In contrast, in the fourh stage dough sheets are cut into strips by a machine for the next process.

In the fifth stage the dough strips are converted into the noodles disc and then in the six stage this discs are cooked in the oil and dried up in an oven. However, in the seventh stage flavours are mixed with vegetables and spices are added in the cups.

Finally, the cups are covered with lid and labelling and sealing of the instant noodles iss done, it is ready for the distribution in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the process from flour storage through to the finished cups, and the overview identifies the main stages and the overall start and end points. The sequence is generally accurate, including mixing, forming sheets and strips, cooking, and adding ingredients. This gives the report a clear account of the diagram’s key features. Some details, however, are not fully supported: the diagram shows vegetables and spices being added, but not “flavours” being mixed with them, and it does not identify an oven or a lid. The overview also groups the stages into phases, but the description of those phases is slightly unclear. Keep the overview precise and distinguish only what the diagram explicitly shows.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account of the stages, with a final sentence describing the product. Sequencing expressions such as “Following this,” “Next,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This is a coherent overall arrangement. However, the repeated stage-by-stage openings make the progression somewhat mechanical, and “In contrast” does not express a contrast between the stages it connects. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly the sentence about flavours, vegetables, and spices. Use fewer repeated transitions and connect each stage with a clear relationship, while keeping the process order easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” and “labelling and sealing,” which helps communicate the main stages. There is some variation in how actions are described, such as “transported,” “mixed,” and “converted.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “the process of instant noodles is produced,” “roller is operated,” and “dried up in an oven” do not describe the diagram naturally. Spelling errors such as “Intially,” “thorougly,” and “fourh” are also noticeable. Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling; for example, say that dough passes through rollers and that the noodles are dried.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the flour is transported from truck and stored in storage silos” and a sequence of linked actions in the overview. The meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “the process of instant noodles is produced” has an incorrect construction, while “this discs are cooked” has a demonstrative and plural-agreement error. The final sentence joins several clauses without clear punctuation, and “the flour is transported from truck” is missing an article. Practise accurate passive forms for describing processes, check singular and plural agreement, and separate complete ideas with appropriate punctuation.
