IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram below illustrates the process in which
the immediate noodles are prepared.
By looking at the given diagram, the manufacturing process of preparation of swift noodles consists of
eight steps which starts from storage silos and ends at labelling+sealing.
By understanding the required criteria, I would like to explain the diagram. The first step is called storage silos in which flour from truck is stored in two large tanks that are joined to each other. In second step, the mixer mixes the flour from tanks with oil and water. After that, the mixed material is rolled on the rollers and moves forward with the help of dough sheets. After passing from dough sheets sector, the material passes through the dough strips that gives the material the shape of noodles discs. In the sixth step, the noodles discs are cooked with oil and then dried. The dried noodles are then putted in cups. After that, the vegetables and spices are added in these cups.In the seventh step, the cups full of prepared noodles are then labelled and sealed. This is the last step of manufacturing process of noodles and thus process is completed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence from flour storage to packaging, and you include several central stages, such as mixing, rolling, shaping, cooking and drying. However, the account does not accurately cover all the stages or their order. The diagram shows eight numbered stages, but the response calls the process eight steps and then mislabels the final stages: vegetables and spices are added before the cups are labelled and sealed, not after labelling. It also says the process ends at labelling and sealing, omitting the finished cups emerging on the conveyor. The overview is present but mostly repeats the start and end points. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the full transformation and report each stage in the correct sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a broadly chronological order and uses sequencing expressions such as “In second step,” “After that,” and “In the sixth step,” so the reader can follow the general process. However, the account is presented as one long paragraph, and the repeated transitions make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some references are also unclear: “After passing from dough sheets sector” does not clearly explain how the sheets become strips, while the sequence around cups, vegetables and labelling is confusing. The numbered stages are not consistently tracked, which contributes to the mistaken order. Organise the response into an introduction and overview followed by a clearly sequenced description, using precise links and references to show how each product moves to the next stage.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “noodles discs,” and “labelled and sealed.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of the manufacturing stages. However, several word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “immediate noodles” and “swift noodles” for instant noodles, and “putted” for placing the noodles in cups. Phrases such as “dough strips that gives the material the shape of noodles discs” also use imprecise wording for the transformation. The range is adequate for describing the diagram but remains repetitive, with frequent reliance on “material,” “step,” and “after that.” Use the diagram’s exact labels where possible and choose more precise verbs for each change.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, “After that, the mixed material is rolled on the rollers and moves forward…” This shows some ability to connect stages, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur in sentence structure, agreement, tense and punctuation. In “the manufacturing process … consists of eight steps which starts,” the verb should agree with “steps”; “that gives” similarly needs to agree with “strips.” The passive form “are then putted” is incorrect, and “the process … starts” would be more suitable than “which starts” in the overview. Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops, and the response shifts between passive and active constructions. Review agreement and passive forms, and punctuate each stage as a complete sentence.
