IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of producing instant noodles.
Overall, the procedure follows a linear multi-stage sequence that begins with flour being collected from the storage and ends with the noodles being labelled and sealed. During the stages the water and oil are mixed with flour which are then rolled into a sheet, the noodles discs are cooked, dried and flavored with spices and vegetables before a noodle is manufactured.
In the initial stages, the flour is loaded into a truck which is used with the mixture of water and oil to produce a dough. After which the dough is rolled into sheets with the help of the roller and then the dough sheets are made into multiple dough strips. After that, the strips are then made into noodles discs which are fried in oil and are dried.
The remaining stages deal with the cooked noodles being flavored with vegetables and spices and are filled in a cup. Finally, the instant noodles are sealed and labelled completing the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the process as a sequence and give a relevant overview, noting that it starts with flour storage and ends with sealing and labelling. Most key stages are included, including mixing, rolling, shaping the strips into discs, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the flour is delivered by truck to the storage silos, rather than being loaded into a truck, and the overview says the noodles are flavoured before “a noodle is manufactured,” which obscures the final packaging stages. The cups and the addition of labels are mentioned, but the sequence could be reported more precisely. This covers the task, though some features are less fully and accurately described than others; a sharper overview and closer attention to the diagram would strengthen it further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages, and the reader can follow the broad progression from preparation to packaging. Sequencing expressions such as “In the initial stages,” “After that” and “Finally” help signal the order. However, several transitions feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “then” and “After that.” The reference in “After which the dough is rolled” is also awkwardly attached to the preceding sentence, while “the remaining stages” groups several distinct steps together rather than guiding the reader through them. To improve progression, describe each stage in order with clearer links and use pronouns only when their referents are unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “linear multi-stage sequence,” “storage,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “sealed.” These choices make the general manufacturing process understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “flour being collected from the storage” is less natural than describing flour being transferred from silos, and “a noodle is manufactured” does not clearly express that the finished product is packaged in cups. “Flavored” is understandable, but “seasoned” is more precise for the addition of vegetables and spices. There is also some repetition of “dough” and “made into.” More precise verbs for the transformations and packaging stages would add flexibility and improve the accuracy of the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “During the stages” and the final sentence introduced by “Finally.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. In “the water and oil are mixed with flour which are then rolled,” the relative clause has an unclear reference and “which” does not agree with the intended noun. “After which the dough is rolled” is a sentence fragment in this context, and “the noodles being flavored with vegetables and spices and are filled in a cup” mixes grammatical patterns. The passive voice is appropriate for a process, but it needs more consistent control. Use complete sentences and check agreement, clause links and parallel verb forms.
