IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram shows the process of manufacturing the instant noodles. It illustrates how instant noodles are made from a raw materials to labeled packages ready to eat.
To start with, flour is stored in silos through a truck containing all the flour. From there flour is mixed with water and oil in a huge mixer. Rollers are used to make dough sheets of the mixed flour. Afterwards dough strips is responsible for making partition of dough sheets for further processing. Step 5 and 6 describes giving noodle disc shape to the dough and cooking those noodles with oil and afterwards drying them respectively.
Furthermore, cooked noodles are put in the cups with vegetables and spices to give the instant noodles its flavor and taste. After the noodles and vegetables and spices are mixed well the cup goes for labeling and finally sealing the cup. After sealing the cup it is ready to eat.
to summarize, the main ingredients for instant noodles are flour, water, oil, vegetables and spices processing through series of mixture to make the final product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You describe the process from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and your opening identifies the transformation from raw materials to a finished product. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear about the full sequence or its main stages, and some details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the diagram shows dough strips being formed from sheets and then shaped into noodle discs; your sentence that “dough strips is responsible for making partition” does not explain this accurately. You also suggest the noodles and vegetables are mixed together, whereas the diagram shows vegetables and spices being added to the cups. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the linear production process and report each stage precisely, including the final labelling and sealing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression, moving from the initial flour storage to the finished cups, and paragraphing separates the early stages from later processing. Sequencing expressions such as “To start with,” “From there,” “Afterwards” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader through the process. The final summary also signals closure, although it repeats information rather than adding a useful overview. Some links between stages are less clear: “Step 5 and 6 describes” compresses two distinct stages, while the sentence beginning “After the noodles and vegetables and spices are mixed well” makes the sequence difficult to follow. Use more precise stage-to-stage links and organise the body so each paragraph covers a coherent group of steps.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “vegetables and spices,” and “sealing,” so the reader can generally follow the manufacturing topic. There is also some attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “further processing” and “final product.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, including “a truck containing all the flour,” “making partition,” and “give the instant noodles its flavor and taste.” Repetition of “flour,” “noodles,” and “cup” also limits flexibility. Choose terms that describe the diagram’s actions directly—for example, flour is transported to silos, dough is cut into strips, and ingredients are added to cups—and avoid redundant wording such as “flavor and taste.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including “From there flour is mixed with water and oil in a huge mixer” and a sequence of actions linked with “Afterwards.” The main stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “dough strips is responsible” has subject–verb disagreement and an awkward construction, while “Step 5 and 6 describes” also has disagreement. In “from a raw materials,” the article and plural form do not agree, and “the cup goes” shifts to the singular despite referring to cups. There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary issues, such as the comma after “to summarize.” Aim for accurate passive forms and consistent plural references, and proofread agreement and articles while retaining some varied sentence structures.
