IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram illustrates the multi-stage process of how instant noodles are manufactured, consisting of eight main steps, beginning with storing the flour in silos and culminating in labelling and sealing.
Overall, it is a linear process and involves various of mechanical and chemical treatments, transitioning from raw material through various processing stages to the final output.
Looking at the first part of the process, the procedure commences with storing the flour in the silos. Following this initial step, the material is then transported into a mixer along with water and oil, subsequently it undergoes with dough sheets then commute into Dough strips.
Turning to he final stages, the semi-processed material is pass through the noodles discs. once this process is completed the material is forwarded for cooking oil and drying process. After being cooked in oil and dried, the noodles are placed into cups, where vegetables and spices are added. Whereas, the last process is labelling and sealing the packet. Finally, the final product is ready for the use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the process as having eight main steps and give a relevant overview of its linear movement from flour storage to the finished product. Several key stages are included, particularly mixing, shaping, cooking and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough is formed into sheets and then strips, while the strips are shaped into noodle discs; the response’s “semi-processed material is pass through the noodles discs” does not clearly report this sequence. The final cups are also labelled and sealed, rather than simply describing a packet. To strengthen the account, report each transformation precisely and include the rollers and the addition of cups at the filling stage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs covering the earlier and later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Following this initial step” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The progression is not consistently smooth, however. The first body paragraph compresses several stages into one sentence, and the transition “Turning to he final stages” contains a typo and does not fully clarify where the description resumes. “Whereas” is also used awkwardly to introduce the final step, and “once” begins a sentence without a capital letter. Use clearer stage-by-stage sequencing and ensure each linking expression accurately shows the relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufactured,” “culminating,” “transported,” “cooking,” and “drying.” These choices show an attempt to describe a technical sequence rather than relying only on basic verbs. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, though: “various of mechanical and chemical treatments” is not natural, “undergoes with dough sheets” does not express the transformation clearly, and “pass through the noodles discs” is difficult to interpret. “Packet” is also less accurate than “cup” for the final product shown. Aim for precise process verbs such as “is rolled into,” “is cut into,” and “is placed in,” and check word forms and collocations when using less familiar vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the clause “where vegetables and spices are added.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors make parts of the sequence unclear. For example, “subsequently it undergoes with dough sheets then commute into Dough strips” has faulty clause structure and verb forms; “the material is pass through” also uses an incorrect passive form. There are further issues with sentence boundaries and capitalization, as in “once this process is completed,” and with the construction “the procedure commences with storing.” Practise accurate passive forms (“is passed,” “are added”) and divide long sequences into complete, well-punctuated sentences.
