IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles. Overall, it is clear that this process contains eight stages. It starts from storage silos and completes with labelling and sealing.
Firstly, flour is preserved into the storage silos. The flour is shifted into the heavy vehicles. Then it comes into the mixer. After that, water and oil are added. The machine in which instant noodles are prepare has rollers. The mixer is located on rollers. After that, this flour passes through the dough sheets. Dough strips convert the flour into a line shape.
Furthermore, noodles disc are available to polish them with cooking oil than drying. After that, these noodles put into cups that stuff with vegetables and spices. Finaly, lebeles are put onto the noodles cup and it covered by sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as having eight stages and provide a basic opening and overview, but the overview is not fully accurate: the process begins with flour entering the storage silos and ends with finished cups emerging after labelling and sealing, rather than ending at the sealing stage alone. Several details are misreported or unclear. For example, flour is delivered to the silos by truck, not shifted from the silos into heavy vehicles, and the rollers shape the dough rather than the mixer being located on rollers. The later stages are only briefly covered, and the response is 18 words below the required minimum. Add the missing finishing detail and explain the stages more precisely to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable sequence, supported by markers such as “Firstly,” “After that,” and “Furthermore,” so the reader can generally follow the process from storage to packaging. The opening and overview also give the response a basic structure. However, progression becomes less clear where details are inaccurate or loosely connected: “The machine in which instant noodles are prepare has rollers” does not clearly explain how the dough moves through the equipment, and “After that, this flour passes through the dough sheets” disrupts the sequence. The final stages are compressed into one sentence. Use separate, logically ordered sentences for each major phase and clearer references to the dough, noodle discs, and cups.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough strips,” and “cooking oil,” which helps identify the stages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the description inaccurate or difficult to interpret. “Flour is preserved into” does not naturally describe storage, while “polish them with cooking oil” misrepresents the cooking stage. “Heavy vehicles” is also not the right term for the flour-delivery truck, and “line shape” is imprecise for dough strips. Spelling errors such as “Finaly” and “lebeles” further reduce control. Build a more precise process vocabulary and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use mostly short sentences and some sequencing clauses, but the range of sentence structures is limited. Errors in verb forms and agreement occur in examples such as “instant noodles are prepare,” “these noodles put into cups,” and “it covered by sealing.” Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “noodles disc” and “the noodles cup.” These problems sometimes make the process relationships unclear, although the overall sequence remains understandable. Practise passive forms, which are especially useful for describing manufacturing: for example, “the flour is mixed with water and oil” and “the cups are labelled and sealed.” Vary sentence structures while checking subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms.
