IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles.

Overall, the whole process consists of eight stages starting with the storage and ending with labelling and sealing.Through the process, the flour is mixed with water and oil, rolled on series of rollers, cut into strips and attain the shape of noodles discs, cooked, dried labelled and sealed.

Initially, the flour from truck is stored in storage silos and then mixes into oil and water with the help of mixer to produce dough. After that, the dough is rolled on series of rollers to produce dough sheets. These sheets cut into long strips and then attain the shape of noodles discs. Then the noodles discs are cooked in oil and dried. After that, the dried noodles are packed in cups and the required amount of vegetables and spices are added in these cups to enhance the flavour. Then the cups full of noodles are labelled and sealed. After that, the noodles are ready for distribute and sale in the markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages and provide a clear overview: flour is stored, mixed, shaped into noodle discs, cooked and dried, then placed in cups for finishing. This gives the reader a sound understanding of the process. Some details are less fully or precisely reported, however. The diagram shows vegetables and spices being added to the cups, but does not explicitly show the noodles being packed into cups before this addition; your wording presents that sequence as certain. The final claim that the product is ready for distribution and sale is not shown. To strengthen the response, report only visible stages and make the overview more precise about the process from flour storage through to the finished sealed cups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response follows the manufacturing sequence in a generally logical way, and the opening overview is separated from the stage-by-stage account. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After that,” and “Then” help the reader follow the process. However, these links are used repeatedly, so the progression can feel mechanical rather than smoothly connected. The overview also runs directly into the next sentence (“sealing.Through”), and several stages are compressed into long sequences, making the relationships between actions less clear. Use paragraph breaks and vary the way you connect stages—for example, group dough preparation and shaping together, then describe cooking and cup finishing. Clearer punctuation and reference to the product at each stage would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelled and sealed,” so the topic is clear. The range is adequate, but several choices and combinations are noticeably unnatural or imprecise. “Rolled on series of rollers” would be more naturally expressed as “passed through a series of rollers,” while “attain the shape of noodles discs” is awkward and could be “formed into noodle discs.” “Enhance the flavour” adds an interpretation not required by the diagram, and “ready for distribute and sale” contains an incorrect word form and collocation. Aim for precise process verbs and standard noun phrases rather than repeating general wording such as “after that.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is usually understandable. However, errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “the flour … then mixes into oil and water” needs a passive form (“is then mixed with water and oil”), and “These sheets cut into long strips” should be “are cut.” The phrase “from truck” needs an article, while “the whole process consists of eight stages starting with the storage and ending…” would be clearer with parallel forms (“starting with flour storage and ending with labelling and sealing”). Punctuation is also inconsistent: there is no space after the full stop in “sealing.Through.” More accurate passive constructions are especially important when describing a manufacturing process.
