IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the production of instant noodles starting from adding flour in storage silos and ending with labelling and sealing.

Overall the process has two phases, one is manufacturing and other is labeling and sealing , It has 8 important steps.

Initially flour added in storage silos, after that flour transfered to mixer where it was mixed with water and oil. Then mixed material passed through a roller and made dough sheets. These sheets changed into dough strips in next stage. Srips became round because of noodles discs. In the sixth step after adding cooking oil noodles discs were dried.

Subsequently, after drying process noodles were shifted into a cups then vegetables & spices were added at the 7th step. Lastly all cups were labelled and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as beginning with flour storage and ending with labelling and sealing, and you give a broad overview of its stages. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the diagram shows eight numbered stages, but the process also includes rollers and the formation of dough sheets and strips, so calling it simply two phases is not especially informative. Some details are unclear or misreported, particularly “strips became round because of noodles discs” and the description of cooking oil and drying. The account also omits that the finished noodles are placed in cups before vegetables and spices are added. The response is 127 words, below the required 150, which limits how fully the stages can be described. Include a clearer overview and report each transition precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Then,” “Subsequently,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the general direction of the process. This coherent overall arrangement supports the explanation. However, some links are mechanical, and the overview’s comma splice (“one is manufacturing and other is labeling and sealing , It has 8 important steps”) interrupts the flow. The transition from dough strips to noodle discs is also difficult to follow because the sentence does not clearly explain what happens. Use complete, well-punctuated sentences and connect each stage explicitly to the next; clearer paragraphing and reference to the cups would make the progression more cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “labelled and sealed,” so the reader can identify many of the main stages. There is some variation in how you describe movement, such as “transfered” and “shifted.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “strips became round because of noodles discs” does not clearly describe the strips being formed into noodle discs, while “shifted into a cups” is an unsuitable collocation. Spelling errors such as “transfered” and “Srips” also reduce control. Aim for precise process verbs and standard spelling—for example, “formed into,” “placed in,” and “emerged as”—rather than relying on general verbs such as “became” and “shifted.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and linked sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries. For example, “Initially flour added” needs a passive verb (“flour is added”), and “where it was mixed” shifts tense from the present-tense process description. “Into a cups” has an article–plural mismatch, while “one is manufacturing and other is labeling and sealing” is missing articles and has faulty punctuation. The sentence beginning “Srips became round because of noodles discs” is also structurally unclear. Use the present simple passive consistently for process stages, check articles and plurals, and separate the overview into complete sentences. These corrections would improve accuracy while allowing you to retain varied sentence forms.
