IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of making instant noodles.
Overall, this process includes eight steps. Beginning with the storage of silos and ending with the labelling and sealing the finished cups. The process involves preparing the dough, shaping and cooking the noodles, and packaging them.
Firstly, floor is stored in a large silos before being transported to a mixer. Water and oil are then added to the flour, and the ingredient are mixed together to form dough. Next dough passes through a series of rollers, which flaten it into sheets. These sheet are subsequently cut into strips. Which are then shaped into noodle discs
The noodle discs are cooked and dried. Once these steps are completed they are cooked and placed into individual cups. Vegetables and spices are added into the cups to improve the flavour of the noddles. Finally the cups are labelled and sealed, making the instant noodles ready for sale and consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages and provide a relevant overview, identifying the process as beginning with storage and ending with labelling and sealing. The summary also groups the stages sensibly into dough preparation, shaping, cooking and packaging. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: flour is stored in silos (not “floor” in “a large silos”), and the noodles are cooked and dried before being placed in cups, rather than being cooked again after that. The overview says there are eight steps, but the sequence is not consistently distinguished from the individual operations. To strengthen the report, describe the transition from dough sheets to strips and discs precisely, and make clear that vegetables and spices are added during cup-filling before the final sealing stage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence, supported by “Firstly,” “Next,” “subsequently,” and “Finally,” and the opening overview helps orient the reader. The stages are generally presented in the order shown in the diagram. However, cohesion is sometimes weakened by sentence-boundary problems: “Which are then shaped into noodle discs” is a fragment, while the overview’s “Beginning with…” sentence is also incomplete. The shift from cooking and drying to cups is not clearly signposted, and “Once these steps are completed they are cooked” makes the reference of “they” uncertain. Use complete sentences and explicit links between stages so the reader can follow the process without having to infer what each pronoun refers to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “transported,” “mixed,” “shaped,” “cooked,” and “sealed,” and terms such as “individual cups” and “ready for sale and consumption” communicate the purpose of the final stages. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “floor” for “flour,” “flaten,” “noddles,” and “ingredient” are noticeable, and “a large silos” is not a natural phrase. “Improve the flavour” adds an unsupported purpose rather than simply reporting that vegetables and spices are added. Aim for accurate technical nouns and concise process collocations; careful proofreading would also prevent errors in key labels from distracting the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and more developed structures, including passive forms such as “are then added” and “are subsequently cut,” which suit a manufacturing process. The sequence is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. “Beginning with the storage of silos and ending with…” is a sentence fragment, and “Which are then shaped…” is another fragment because it is separated from the clause it depends on. There are also agreement and article problems in “the ingredient are mixed” and “a large silos,” as well as a missing comma after the introductory clause “Once these steps are completed.” Practise joining dependent clauses to complete sentences and checking singular/plural agreement and articles.
