IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram shown the life cycle of how the instant noodles are made. Manufacturing of instant noodles contains total of eight stage and the diagram illustrates how from flour to its labeling, the instant noodles are manufactured.
Initially the flour is stored in silos. It is filled by trucks containing flour then the flour is mixed with water and oil in a large mixer. Next, using rollers dough sheets are made and after that strips are used to make chunks of dough. Furthermore, striped dough is shaped to noodle discs and cooked with oil following with drying it.
After drying the noodles, it is properly mixed with vegetables and spices in a cup, to give the noodles its flavor. Afterwards, The last step includes labeling the cup and sealing the cup for selling. When a cup is sealed instant noodles are ready to eat and can be distributed in the markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, then adding flavouring and packaging. The opening also identifies the process as having eight stages, and most details correspond to the diagram. However, some stages are described imprecisely: the dough is formed into strips and then noodle discs, rather than “chunks of dough,” and the diagram shows vegetables and spices being added as the cups are filled, not noodles being mixed with them in a cup. The overview is present but largely repeats the process rather than highlighting its overall progression from raw flour to sealed cups. Avoid adding unsupported claims such as the product being “ready to eat” or distributed to markets; focus instead on the stages shown and describe them accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear chronological order, with separate paragraphs for the opening and successive parts of the process. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Next,” “Furthermore,” and “Afterwards” help the reader follow the stages, and the progression from flour to packaging is easy to understand. This is a coherent overall structure, with some evidence of flexible linking. However, several transitions feel mechanical, and “Furthermore” does not clearly signal the next step in a process. The final paragraph also combines flavouring, sealing and claims about distribution without a clear distinction between diagram information and added commentary. Use more precise links, and group the stages into a beginning, middle and final packaging phase.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “strips,” “noodle discs,” and “labeling,” so the reader can follow the general manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “cooked with oil” and “sealing.” However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “chunks of dough” does not describe the strips shown, “striped dough” is not the right term, and “mixed with vegetables and spices in a cup” misrepresents the stage. “Life cycle” is also less suitable than “manufacturing process” for this diagram. Aim for precise process collocations and avoid repeating “cup” and “instant noodles” where clearer reference is possible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including sequencing clauses such as “After drying the noodles…” and a passive construction in “the instant noodles are manufactured.” The main stages remain understandable despite some grammatical errors. For example, “The diagram shown” needs a past-tense verb (“shows”), while “contains total of eight stage” has errors in the article and plural form. In “following with drying it,” the construction and pronoun are not well formed, and “the noodles its flavor” shows a problem with agreement and possessive reference. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Afterwards, The last step.” Check subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
