IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given diagram below illustrates the step-by-step process of manufacturing instant cup noodles from the scrap.

Overall, the process consists of several stages, initially, the flour is transported to storage silos and transported to the mixer. After undergoing different industrial stages, instant noodles are formed and it is packaged in a cup for distribution.

The manufacturing begins with the flour being stored in storage silos and then it is transported to mixer with addition of water and oil. The mixture is poured to the rollers and dough sheets are formed. Furthermore, the sheets are cut into several dough strips and passed to the noodles discs. where the noodles are cooked in oil and dried.

The formed noodle products are then packaged in a cup with vegetables and spices. Additionally, the cups are labled with their brand and tightly sealed. Finally, the finished product is then distributed to the different outlets for sales.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and cup packaging, and your overview identifies the process’s beginning and end. This gives the reader a clear account of the central stages. Some details, however, are less fully or precisely reported: the noodles are formed into discs before cooking, and the diagram shows vegetables and spices being added as the cups are filled. The final claim that the product is distributed to outlets is not shown in the visual, so it should be omitted. To strengthen the response further, describe the full sequence accurately and include the diagram’s final labelling and sealing stage in the overview or process account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two chronological body paragraphs, so the reader can follow the manufacturing process from start to finish. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” “Additionally” and “Finally” help signal progression. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the stages are generally presented in a logical order. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the sentence beginning “Furthermore” joins several stages without clearly distinguishing the transition from sheets to strips and then to discs. The reference in “The formed noodle products” is also somewhat broad. Use a few more precise transitions and make each stage’s relationship to the next explicit to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “cooked” and “sealed.” These terms make the manufacturing sequence understandable, and there are attempts at more formal phrasing such as “undergoing different industrial stages.” Some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “transported” is used twice in the overview, “poured to the rollers” is not a natural description, and “packaged in a cup” could more accurately describe the filling stage. There is also a spelling error in “labled.” Choose verbs that describe each action precisely and check spelling; this would improve flexibility and accuracy without changing the clear overall meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including passive constructions such as “the flour is transported” and “the cups are labled,” which suit a process description. Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems persist. For example, “transported to mixer” is missing an article, and “The mixture is poured to the rollers” has an incorrect preposition within the construction. The sentence “passed to the noodles discs. where the noodles are cooked” is incorrectly divided by a full stop, leaving “where” to begin an incomplete sentence. There is also a tense shift between present-tense process stages and “were formed.” Review articles, prepositions, sentence boundaries and consistent present tense to improve control.
