IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram depicts the process of production of instant noodles. It consists of different stages. Starting from flour storage to ending at labelling and sealing.
Initially, silos are used to store flour. Then flour is transported to mixer. Water and oil are added to flour and all these ingredients are mixed up by using mixer. This mixture is passed through rollers and converted into dough sheets. These sheets passed through strips, where these sheets are cut. Sheets are now in the shape of discs. These discs are put into a boiler where they are cooked. They are palced to be dried completely.. After they are dried, vegetables and certain spices are added to produce some kind of flavour. For advertisement and marketing purposes, cups are labelled. Once labelling is completed, cups are sealed off. Finally, the finishing product is sent to retailers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as instant-noodle production and describe several key stages, including flour storage, mixing, shaping, cooking, drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the account is incomplete and includes details not shown in the diagram: it says the cups are labelled for “advertisement and marketing purposes” and that the finished product is sent to retailers. The diagram instead shows noodles placed into cups, followed by labelling and sealing, with finished cups emerging on a conveyor. The overview is also limited to a brief opening rather than summarising the main sequence or its endpoint. The response is below the required 150 words. To improve, report the stages accurately and include a concise overview of the full process.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are generally presented in a sensible order, and sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After they are dried,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The response also moves from preparation to packaging without major disruption. However, the opening fragment, “Starting from flour storage to ending at labelling and sealing,” is not integrated into a complete sentence, and the paragraph is presented as one block rather than being organised into a clear overview and process description. Some links are mechanical, while the reference in “These sheets passed through strips” is unclear. Use a separate overview and group the stages into logical phases, with precise references to each material as it changes form.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “discs,” and “sealed,” which makes the general subject clear. There is some useful variation in describing stages, such as “converted into” and “added.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “passed through strips” does not clearly describe the dough being cut into strips, and “boiler” is not the label used for the cooking-and-drying stage. “Some kind of flavour” is vague, while “advertisement and marketing purposes” adds an unsupported interpretation. Spelling errors such as “palced” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process terms and avoid inventing purposes; for example, describe noodles as being cut into strips and formed into discs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes mostly straightforward sentences and some attempts to combine stages, for example, “Water and oil are added to flour and all these ingredients are mixed up by using mixer.” The sequence is usually understandable, but there are some errors in sentence construction, tense, and punctuation. “Starting from flour storage to ending at labelling and sealing” is a fragment, and “These sheets passed through strips” lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the sheets and the cutting stage. The process description would be more consistent in the present passive, such as “The sheets are cut into strips.” There are also punctuation problems, including the missing space after “flour.” and the doubled full stop after “completely.” Practise accurate passive forms and complete sentences for each stage.
