IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In this diagram, we can see a manufacturing chain of instant noodles that how its manufactured and it is divided into the 8 steps like storage silos, mixer, dough sheets, dough stips, noodles discs, cooking+drying, vegetables + spices, labelling+ sealings. It is bascially a flow chart.
Here, we can see that at first in this process they took the flour from the storage silos, nd they they put it in the mixer including water and oil in proportion. After that there is a long proceessing chain in a continuation. After mixing all the material, they roll the dough and made a dough sheet in third step. Then, the sheets cut into strip in vertical side. Later on, they turn the strips into noodle discs and then cook and fry it into the oil and dry it. After, drying the noodles they pour it into the cups and add the dried vegetables and spices into it. after this step of the process, they labelled and sealed the cups and packed it into the containers

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include many central stages, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and sealing. However, the account is only partly complete and some details are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the diagram shows dough strips being formed and then made into noodle discs, but “they turn the strips into noodle discs” gives little indication of the intervening machinery. The final stage is labelling and sealing; “packed it into the containers” is not shown, while the cups themselves are filled during the process. There is no clear overview of the main pattern, such as the transformation of flour into finished cups. A concise overview and more precise reporting of the stages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are mostly presented in chronological order, and sequencing expressions such as “After that,” “Then,” and “Later on” help the reader follow the process. However, the response is written as one continuous paragraph, so the overview and detailed stages are not clearly separated. Some links are repetitive or awkward, including “After that there is a long processing chain in a continuation,” which does not add useful information, and the repeated use of “after” makes the progression feel mechanical. The opening also lists the stages before the account begins, without establishing a clear overall summary. Organise the response into an overview and a body paragraph, and use a wider range of accurate links to show how each stage leads to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheet,” “noodle discs,” and “labelled and sealed,” so the reader can recognise most of the production stages. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “stips,” “bascially,” and “proceessing” are misspelled, while “in proportion” is not a natural way to describe adding water and oil. Phrases such as “long processing chain in a continuation” are also unclear, and “packed it into the containers” introduces an unsupported detail. Aim for precise process verbs and standard collocations, such as “is transferred,” “is rolled,” and “is cut into strips,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence structure, verb forms, articles, and agreement. The opening phrase “a manufacturing chain … that how its manufactured” is not grammatically complete; “they took the flour … nd they they put it” contains repetition and faulty tense control. Later, “the sheets cut into strip” is missing a passive verb and has a number error, while “they labelled and sealed the cups and packed it” shifts from plural “cups” to singular “it.” Use consistent present simple passive forms for a process, for example, “The flour is transferred to a mixer,” and check that each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
