IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram shows the process of manufacturing of instant noodles. Noodles are prepared by the flour which is a basic constituent stored in the storage silos which is then transfered from the silos to the mixer by the mean of trasport. Mixer is the machcine from where the manufacturing starts as it mixes the flour with water and oil making the flour like a jelly. Furthermore, it is passed to the rollers. In this process, jelly like flour is converted into the dough sheets and after that into dough strips. As the process continues, noodles discs are made from the dough strips. Moreover, it is passed through the cooking oil to be cooked and then dried. Here, the manufacturing process ends and the packaging process starts. The prepared noodles are put into the round cups where vegetables and spices are added for the betterment of taste. After the packaging, it is labled by the manufacturer and then sealed to make it last long. At the end, these sealed instant noodles are sold to the shops for further sell purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You describe the main production sequence, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, making noodle discs, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices before labelling and sealing. However, the response only partially reports the diagram: it does not clearly explain that flour arrives by truck and is stored in silos, that rollers shape the dough, or that cups are introduced at the filling stage. The overview is also unclear: “the manufacturing process ends” before packaging, although the diagram presents one continuous process ending with finished cups. The claim that the noodles are sold to shops is not shown. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the full sequence and report only stages supported by the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are generally presented in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “At the end” help signal progression. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, the links sometimes feel mechanical, and the single paragraph makes it harder to distinguish the overview from the detailed stages. Some references are unclear: “it is passed” could refer to the flour, dough, or noodles, while “Here” does not precisely identify the point in the process. Organise the response into an introduction and overview followed by a clearly sequenced description, and use specific nouns such as “the dough” or “the noodle discs” instead of ambiguous pronouns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “cooking oil,” and “sealed,” which helps communicate the stages. There is some variety in how you describe the process, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “manufacturing of instant noodles,” “by the mean of trasport,” and “for further sell purpose.” Spelling errors in “transfered,” “machcine,” and “labled” also reduce accuracy. Some expressions, including “jelly like flour” and “for the betterment of taste,” are not natural descriptions for this diagram. Aim for precise, conventional process language, for example “the flour is transported,” “the mixture forms dough,” and “seasonings are added.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and complex sentences, using clauses such as “which is then transfered from the silos” and “where vegetables and spices are added.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Noodles are prepared by the flour” uses an unsuitable passive construction, and “Mixer is the machcine from where the manufacturing starts” is missing an article and has an awkward clause structure. There are also problems with verb forms and agreement in “it is then transfered” and “it is passed,” where the referent is unclear. Use consistent present simple passive forms for the process, such as “The flour is transferred to a mixer,” and check articles and sentence boundaries.
