IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing of instant noodles.
Overall, there are eight different stages to manufacture instant noodles. Beginning with storing flour in big silos and ending with labeling and sealing the noodle cup. Beside this steps there are also other processing stages required to prepare, cook and package the noodles.
Initially large silos are filled with flour, which is delivered by truck. it is then mixed with water and oil in a big mixture to form a dough. Next, rollers are used to make large dough sheets, which are subsequently cut into strips. These strips are shaped into noodle discs before being cooked by oil and dried for the next stage.
In the following stages, dried noodles are filled in cups. Vegetables and spices are added to each cup to provide flavor. Finally the cups are labelled and sealed by machines. The finished products are then ready for distribution and sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the process as a sequence and give a relevant overview, noting that it begins with flour storage and ends with labelling and sealing. Most key stages are accurately reported, including mixing, forming sheets and strips, shaping discs, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. This covers the task well, though some details are less fully or precisely described: the diagram shows the noodles entering cups as vegetables and spices are added, rather than the noodles simply being “filled in cups,” and the final distribution and sale are not shown. To strengthen the response, describe the cup-filling and packaging stages more exactly and avoid adding information beyond the diagram. The overview could also summarise the main transformation from flour to packaged cups more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the preparation stages and then the packaging stages. Sequencing words such as “Initially,” “Next,” “In the following stages,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This is a coherent progression, but cohesion is not always smooth. The overview contains a sentence fragment beginning “Beginning with…,” and “Beside this steps” is an unclear link between ideas. The transition from cooking and drying to cup filling could also make the sequence more explicit. Use complete sentences in the overview and connect each stage directly to the next, while varying transitions rather than relying mainly on time markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “discs,” and “sealed,” so the main stages are generally understandable. However, the range and precision are uneven, and several choices are inaccurate or informal for this report. “Big silos” and “big mixture” are imprecise; “mixture” also names the resulting substance rather than the machine, which should be a mixer. “Cooked by oil” is an awkward collocation, while “filled in cups” does not clearly express how the noodles are placed into cups. Aim for precise process verbs and standard technical terms, and check spelling consistency, such as “labelled” in British English.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the relative clause in “which is delivered by truck” and the passive construction “are added to each cup.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some sentence-level errors limit accuracy. “Beginning with storing flour … and ending with…” is a fragment rather than a complete overview sentence. The sentence starting “it is then mixed” begins with a lowercase letter after a full stop, and “Beside this steps” has a determiner–noun agreement error. There is also an awkward passive pattern in “before being cooked by oil and dried.” Practise complete overview sentences, accurate agreement, and parallel passive forms, for example, “The discs are cooked in oil and then dried.”
