IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram shows the process of how instant noodles are manufactured through eight stages.

Overall, there are eight steps through which noodles are made and the starting point for it is how Flour is taken by a truck from Storage silos to the noodles factory at mixer, ending it by placing them into plastic cups and labeling and sealing the packets.

The first step presents how Flour is taken from the Storage silos and getting it mixed after that with adding water and oil in it. Once the Dough process is completed, Dough sheets and Rollers are prepared to keep the dough on it. The fourth step involves Dough strips which are placed to make line like noodles from it. Noodles discs are then made in a round shape along with the process of cooking and drying it.

Furthermore, Vegetables and spices are added into the cups along with the noodles, and those cups then are labeled and sealed with a proper packeging. Once the whole procedure is done, the instant noodles are ready to be sold.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having eight stages and give a relevant overview from flour storage through to the finished cups. The main sequence is broadly represented, including mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices before packaging. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the flour is delivered by truck to the storage silos, rather than taken from the silos by truck to the factory, and the dough sheets are formed by rollers rather than being “prepared to keep the dough on” them. The account also does not clearly explain how strips become noodle discs or that the noodles are placed into cups. Covering these stages more precisely would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the earlier and later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “The first step,” “The fourth step,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are generally presented in the right order. Some links are mechanical or imprecise, however. “Once the Dough process is completed” does not clearly connect the mixing stage to sheet formation, while “ending it by” makes the overview’s sequence awkward. The numbered references also skip stages without explaining the transitions. Use more precise links such as “Next” and “After the dough is rolled into sheets” to strengthen progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “Storage silos,” “Dough sheets,” “Dough strips,” “cooking and drying,” and “labeled and sealed,” so the reader can identify most stages. There is some attempt to describe the product’s shape and movement, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “line like noodles” is vague, “proper packeging” is misspelled and awkward, and “Dough sheets and Rollers are prepared to keep the dough on it” does not express the machinery’s function accurately. Capitalisation of common process terms is also inconsistent. Choose precise verbs for each transformation—such as “rolled,” “cut,” and “formed”—and check spelling and collocations to make the description clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “Furthermore, Vegetables and spices are added into the cups along with the noodles, and those cups then are labeled and sealed.” The main stages remain understandable, but some sentence patterns are awkward or inaccurate. In the overview, “the starting point for it is how Flour is taken” is not a clear grammatical construction, and “ending it by placing them” has an unclear reference. The phrase “after that with adding water and oil in it” also combines structures incorrectly. In addition, “those cups then are labeled” has an unnatural adverb position. Practise concise passive forms for process descriptions, for example, “Water and oil are added to the flour in the mixer,” and check that pronouns clearly refer to the correct item.
