IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram shows the process of manufacturing intant noodles.
In general, it can be clearly seen that there are several stages in the manufacturing of noodles and all the stages are essential to complete this process. The process is starts form stored flour and ended on the sealing process.
When the first stage starts, flour is added to the storage silor and then water and oil fixed to make dough. This dough is then converted into roolers to make dough sheets. Dough strips are made from dough sheets with the help of machines. In the next step, dough strips are converted into noodles discs and noodles discs are cooked by adding some oil and then dryed it.
Moving to the next stage, cups are made from this dryed noodles discs and cups are filled with vegetables and some spices. In the last step, the cups are labeled and then the cups are sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You describe the process in sequence, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and include a clear overall statement that it has several stages. Most details correspond to the diagram. However, the overview is general rather than highlighting the key transformation from flour into noodle discs and their subsequent cooking and packaging. Some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough is not “converted into rollers”; it passes through rollers to form sheets, and the cups are not made from the dried noodle discs. The diagram shows noodles placed into cups, with vegetables and spices added. Clarifying these stages and reporting the main features more precisely would make the account more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, and the stages generally progress in the correct order. Sequencing phrases such as “When the first stage starts,” “In the next step” and “In the last step” help the reader follow the process. This clear overall arrangement is a strength. However, some links are mechanical, and the repeated use of “then” and “cups” makes the final paragraph less fluent. The reference “This dough” is understandable, but the transition to “converted into roolers” obscures the relationship between the dough and the equipment. Use more precise links and refer clearly to each material or product as it moves between stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” “vegetables” and “sealed,” so the reader can identify most stages. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “dough is converted into roolers” confuses the product with the equipment, while “cups are made from this dryed noodles discs” misrepresents the packaging stage. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “intant,” “silor,” “roolers” and “dryed.” These do not prevent the general meaning from being understood, but they reduce precision. Build a more accurate set of process verbs and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “The process is starts form stored flour and ended on the sealing process” combines incompatible verb forms and tenses; a clearer version would be “The process starts with flour storage and ends with sealing.” In “water and oil fixed to make dough,” the passive verb is missing, and “dryed it” does not fit the sentence structure. There are also article and number issues in “this dryed noodles discs.” Aim for consistent present simple or passive forms when describing the process, and check that each clause has a complete, correctly formed verb.
