IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process diagram illustrates the sequential order of processes involved in the production of instant noodles. This procedure includes eight complex stages begining from the primary raw material flour to the end product instant noodles.
Initially, flour stored in the storage silos is transfered to a mixer and mixed with water and oil which is then converted to a dough. Then dough sheets are produced by passing through rollers. Further it is transformed into stripped form. Subsequently, noodles discs are produced from dough stripes. Later, these noodles discs are cooked in oil. After that the cooked noodles discs are dried to pack it in readymade cups. In the next stage vegetables and spices are added to the noodles discs packed in various cups. Finally, the cups filled with instant noodles are sealed and labelled which are ready to use.
To sum up, manufacturing of instant noodles comprises of different stages includes mixing, stripping, cooking, drying, labelling and sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and the sequence is generally clear. The opening also identifies the process as having eight stages. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise: the diagram shows the noodles being cooked in oil and then dried, while your account says they are dried “to pack it” before vegetables and spices are added, which makes the order and relationship between these steps unclear. The addition of vegetables and spices is mentioned, but the cups’ movement through the final stages and the finished product emerging on a conveyor are omitted. Your concluding summary repeats selected stages rather than giving a clear overview of the process’s overall progression. Include these features to make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a chronological account, and a concluding sentence. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Then,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the production stages, and the process is mostly presented in the correct order. This coherent progression meets the expected standard, though the linking can feel mechanical because nearly every step is introduced with a time marker. Some connections are also unclear: “After that the cooked noodles discs are dried to pack it” does not clearly distinguish drying from packing, and the next sentence’s reference to noodles “packed in various cups” makes the sequence harder to follow. Use clearer links between related stages and make references such as “it” or “these” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “noodles discs,” and “sealed and labelled.” These terms make the subject clear, and “sequential order” and “production” suit the task. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies: “begining” and “transfered” are misspelled, while “stripped form” and “dough stripes” are not appropriate descriptions of dough strips. “Readymade cups” is also less precise than simply describing cups being filled or used in packaging. Aim for accurate technical labels and natural collocations, and avoid repeating “noodles discs” where a clear reference such as “the noodles” would work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including the opening sentence and the clause “which is then converted to a dough.” The sequence remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. For example, “This procedure includes eight complex stages begining” needs a finite or participial form such as “stages, beginning,” and “manufacturing … comprises of different stages includes” combines incompatible verb patterns. There are also issues with agreement and reference in “the cooked noodles discs are dried to pack it,” where the pronoun does not agree with the plural noun and the purpose relationship is unclear. Practise controlling clauses and verb patterns, and check agreement and punctuation when joining process steps. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the account.
