IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates a linear process of making instant noodles from the flour.
Overall, this process begins with the start of storage silos to the end of labelling and packing.
First of all, flour is dispacted from storage silos and mixed with combination of water and oil on rollers where mixed flour are converted into dough sheets. After further processsing there sheets gained the form of noodles discs which leads into cooking process.By cooking with help of using oil and drying these noodles discs obtained the form of cup like structures. At this stage vegetables and spices are added to enhance the taste of these noodle cups. After that noodles are ready for labelling and sealing. So noodles are packed and ready to send markets.
Consequently manufacturing of noodles undergoes various process with mixing, cooking and drying. At the end noodles are prepaired

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the diagram as a manufacturing process and give a basic overview, noting that it starts with flour storage and ends with labelling and packing. You also mention mixing, cooking, drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the account is incomplete: it skips the stages in which dough becomes sheets, strips, and noodle discs, and it does not clearly explain that cups are filled before labelling and sealing. The claim that the flour is mixed “on rollers” also confuses the mixer with the later rolling stage. The response is 13 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail available. To strengthen the report, describe the main stages in order and include a fuller overview of how the product changes form.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a recognisable sequence, signalled by phrases such as “First of all,” “At this stage,” and “After that,” and the opening gives the reader a general sense of the process. However, the response is presented as one paragraph, so the overview and stage-by-stage description are not clearly separated. Progression also becomes difficult to follow where several stages are compressed into one sentence: “After further processsing there sheets gained the form of noodles discs which leads into cooking process.” The final sentence beginning “Consequently” repeats the general idea rather than adding a clear concluding point. Use a separate overview paragraph, then group the stages into logical sections and connect each step with precise sequencing language.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “cooking,” “drying,” and “labelling and sealing,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “dispatched” (written as “dispacted”), “combination” without a suitable article, and “cup like structures,” which does not accurately describe the product at that stage. Repetition of “noodles” and “process” also makes the description less precise. Some spelling errors, including “processsing,” “prepaired,” and “there” for “their,” are noticeable. Build a more accurate set of process verbs and use specific terms for the transformations shown in the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including “After that noodles are ready for labelling and sealing,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “mixed flour are converted” and “these noodles discs obtained the form,” while missing articles affect phrases such as “with combination of water and oil” and “into cooking process.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also weak: there is no space after the full stop in “sheets. After,” and the final sentence is incomplete in meaning. These errors sometimes make the sequence harder to understand. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, agreement, and punctuation when editing.
