IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing of the instant noodles in large scale factory.

Overall, the production of instant noodles involves eight main stages, beginning with the storage of flour in silos and ending with the labelling and sealing of the finished cups. The process includes preparing the dough, shaping and cooking the noodles, and adding the final ingredients before packaging.

The process started with the storage of flour in giant silos, from which it transferd to a mixer. In mixer flour is mixed with oil and water and pass through series of roller which result in the formation of dough sheets. This sheets are converted into dough strips wich further arranged into a individual noodle disc.

In the next stage, noodle disc are cooked in oil and dried. Once the process is complete, the dried noodles placed in individual cups. Vegetables and spices are added to each cup to give flavour to the noodles. Finally the cups are labbled and sealed, and ready for the distribution in market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the eight-stage process, identifying its start in flour storage and its finish with labelling and sealing, and you group the main operations into dough preparation, shaping, cooking and packaging. The sequence is generally accurate, and the account includes the addition of water and oil, vegetables and spices. This covers the task well. A few details could be more precise: the diagram shows the noodles being cooked in oil and dried before cups are filled, but your wording, “the dried noodles placed in individual cups,” does not clearly report that the cups are added at the same stage as the vegetables and spices. Also, “ready for the distribution in market” adds an outcome not shown. More exact reporting of the final stages would strengthen an otherwise clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs that follow the process from beginning to end. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “The process started,” “In the next stage” and “Finally” make the progression easy to follow, and the overview helps the reader understand the process as a whole. Some links between steps could be more precise: “which result in the formation” does not clearly connect the rollers to the dough sheets, while “Once the process is complete” leaves the referent of “the process” vague. The final paragraph also moves from drying to cup filling without clearly signalling that cups and ingredients are added together. Clearer references and more exact transitions would make the cohesion more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “formation,” “converted,” “cooked,” “dried,” and “sealed,” and the reader can follow the stages. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “arranged into a individual noodle disc” is not a natural description of the strips becoming discs, and “give flavour to the noodles” is less precise than describing the ingredients as flavouring the noodles. There are also spelling errors in “transferd,” “wich” and “labbled,” alongside repeated use of “process” and “stage.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy and control. Aim for precise manufacturing verbs and check spelling, articles within phrases, and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “silos, from which it transferd to a mixer” and a time clause beginning “Once the process is complete.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but grammatical errors occur in several sentences. Examples include missing articles in “In mixer” and “through series of roller,” subject–verb disagreement in “This sheets are converted,” and missing auxiliaries in “the dried noodles placed” and “In mixer flour is mixed.” Singular and plural forms are also inconsistent in “noodle disc are cooked.” These errors show that control of basic sentence patterns is not yet consistent, even though you attempt more complex structures. Practise accurate passive forms and agreement, and proofread each sentence for its subject, verb and required articles.
