IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing the instant noodles, from storage of floor to end product production.

The process contain eight steps. From beginning the floor is stored and then at the end labels are produced. It consist of mixing the floor, making the the dough strips, cooking and drying the noodles, adding spices and vegetables, and at the end packaging them.

From start the floor is stored in the large silos. Then it is mixed with oil and water in the mixer. In the next step the rollers are used to make the dough which is then converted into the strips. Then the are transferred to the disc which help to cook in oil and then it is dried here. In the further step they are put in the cups and spices are added with vegetables to make them more delicious. At the end they are labelled and sealed for further distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as manufacturing instant noodles and include several key stages, including mixing, forming dough strips, cooking and drying, adding vegetables and spices, and packaging. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it says labels are produced at the end, whereas labels are applied to the cups, and the process has more stages than the stated eight if the separate shaping and preparation stages are counted. Some details are unclear or misreported, particularly “the disc which help to cook in oil”; the discs are formed before they enter the cooking-and-drying stage. To strengthen the response, give a precise overview of the sequence from flour storage to sealed cups, and describe the rollers, dough sheets, strips, discs, and cup-filling stages more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the general order of production, moving from flour storage through mixing and shaping to cooking, adding ingredients, and sealing. The use of “Then,” “In the next step,” and “At the end” helps signal sequence, and the information is grouped into an introduction, overview, and process description. However, progression is sometimes difficult to follow because several stages are compressed into long sentences, such as the account of the rollers, dough, strips, and discs. References such as “they” and “here” are also unclear, making it hard to identify which product or machine is meant. Use clearer stage-by-stage sentences and repeat the relevant noun where needed to make the sequence more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “strips,” “spices,” and “sealed,” so the reader can recognise the main stages. There is also some attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “converted into” and “transferred.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate: “floor” is used for “flour,” “labels are produced” does not describe the final labelling stage, and “the disc” is imprecise for the noodle discs. “Make them more delicious” is informal and evaluative for an objective process description. Aim for precise technical terms and neutral verbs such as “form,” “pass through,” “add,” and “package”; this would make the account clearer and more appropriate to IELTS Task 1.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and linked sentences, including “Then it is mixed with oil and water in the mixer” and a longer sequence beginning “In the next step.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The process contain” has subject–verb disagreement, while “It consist” also needs an agreeing verb. In “Then the are transferred,” the subject is missing, and “the disc which help” has unclear agreement and sentence structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “the dough strips” and “the cups.” Use a wider range of controlled sentence patterns, check agreement and pronoun references, and punctuate longer sequences so each production stage is expressed clearly.
