IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illlustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles from transportation of raw materials to final packaging process.
Firstly, the flour is transported to the factory in a truck and stored in the storage silos. It is transferred to a mixer where the flour is mixed with oil and water to make consistent dough. The prepared dough is rolled into sheets with the help of rollers and simultaneously stripped into dough strips. The striped dough is then placed into the noodles discs where is takes the shape of intant noodles.
Next process is frying noodles in oil and drying the excessive oil. They are cooked in oil and afer drying process, the cooked noodles are transferred into the cups where vegetables and spices are added.
Final process of the manufacturing steps is labelling and sealing of the instant noodles cups. After this step the package is ready for shipping to the customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response gives a relevant account of the process, beginning with flour delivery and ending with labelling and sealing, and it includes several key stages such as mixing, rolling, frying and adding vegetables and spices. However, the overview is not clearly separated from the step-by-step description, and some stages are reported inaccurately or unclearly. For example, the dough is not “simultaneously stripped” while being rolled into sheets: it passes through stages to become sheets and then strips. The noodles do not enter “the noodles discs”; rather, the strips are formed into discs before cooking. The final shipping claim is not shown in the diagram. A clearer overview of the linear process and more precise reporting of these transitions would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows the diagram’s general sequence, and the use of “Firstly,” “Next process,” and “Final process” helps the reader recognise the main phases. Paragraphing also separates the early production stages from cooking and packaging. This clear overall progression supports the reader’s understanding. Some links between stages are less smooth, however: “The prepared dough is rolled into sheets … and simultaneously stripped” compresses distinct steps, while “They are cooked in oil” has an unclear reference after the noodles and cups have both been mentioned. The repeated use of “process” in the stage openings also makes the linking somewhat mechanical. Use more precise references and connect each stage in the order shown to improve cohesion further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “transported,” “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “drying,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms make the topic clear, and some choices such as “raw materials” and “final packaging” help frame the description. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward choices: “stripped” does not describe the formation of dough strips, “placed into the noodles discs” misrepresents how the discs are made, and “drying the excessive oil” is not a natural description of the diagram’s drying stage. Spelling slips such as “illlustrates,” “intant,” and “afer” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise process verbs and check spelling to make the vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “After this step the package is ready for shipping to the customers,” and most of the process remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in sentence construction and reference. In “where is takes the shape,” the subject and verb are incorrectly formed; “where it takes shape” would be grammatical. “Next process is frying noodles” needs an article or a different construction, such as “The next stage is frying the noodles.” There are also punctuation and spacing problems, including the missing space after “silos.” and the comma needed after introductory phrases. More consistent control of articles, pronouns and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
