IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The image displays the 8 steps process of how flour is transformed into the instant noodles.
The manufacturing began when the flour is placed in the storage silos. After that the mixer is used in which flour is combined with oil and water to make it soft followed by the formation of dough sheets with the help of rollers. Then these sheets are converted into the dough strips. Subsequently, these strips are changed into noodles discs.
In the next step cooking oil is added to the discs and leave for drying. Then vegetables and spices are added to the noodles cup. Lastly, the cups are labelled and sealed and ready for dispatch.
This is the wholesome process of instant noodles manufacturing from the raw flour. It is a series of process that gives us a final product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence from flour storage to finished instant noodles, and you include several key stages, such as mixing, forming sheets and strips, cooking, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the account is incomplete and some details are unclear: it does not mention the noodles being formed into discs before cooking, or that the finished cups emerge on a conveyor. The description of cooking is also imprecise: the diagram shows the discs being cooked in oil and then dried, rather than oil simply being added. The overview, “a series of process,” is too general to highlight the main stages. The response is also 13 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail reported. Cover the full sequence and give a clearer overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and paragraphing separates the main process description from the brief concluding statement. Sequencing expressions such as “After that,” “Then,” “Subsequently,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the production line. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical because most stages are linked with similar time markers, and the final paragraph repeats the idea that this is a process without adding useful information. Some connections are also unclear, particularly “Then vegetables and spices are added to the noodles cup,” which does not explain how the noodles enter the cups. Grouping the stages into preparation, shaping and packaging, and using clearer references between them would make the organisation more cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelled and sealed,” so the reader can understand the general subject. There is some variation in how you describe changes, with “transformed,” “combined,” and “converted.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise for a process report: “make it soft,” “changed into,” and “wholesome process” do not describe the stages naturally. “Cooking oil is added” also suggests a separate addition rather than cooking the discs in an oil bath. Aim for precise manufacturing collocations and avoid repeating broad words such as “process.” This would make the description clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including “After that the mixer is used in which flour is combined with oil and water,” and the sequence is usually understandable. However, some errors in tense, agreement, and sentence construction remain. “The manufacturing began when the flour is placed” shifts from past to present, while “cooking oil is added to the discs and leave for drying” has an inconsistent verb form and an unclear subject. The opening phrase “the 8 steps process” also has an incorrect noun form, and “It is a series of process” has a number-agreement error. Use the present simple consistently for a process diagram, and check that each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
