IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided diagram outlines the process by which instant noodles are manufactured. Overall,it is an industrial process and consists of eight phases. Commencing with the mixing of raw materials, which is followed by other processes such as cutting, cooking, drying, and ending with the production of instant noodles.

To begin with, raw material such as flour is carried away in a truck from a storage silo to a factory where it is mixed in a mixer with oil and water to form dough. The dough is then compressed to form evenly shaped dough sheets, these sheets are passes through a cutter and reduced to thinner dough strips, which are further broken down to noodle discs.

The newly formed noodle discs are semi cooked in oil and then dried before being added into cups. The noodle discs are evenly distributed into several cups and mixed with vegetables and spices . Moving on, the cups containing the noodles and spices are then sealed and labeled with basic information such as the manufacturing date, expiry date and nutritional value it contains, after this thay are tightly sealed and ready to be sold in markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear account of the main production sequence, from flour and mixing through shaping, cooking, drying and packaging, and your opening identifies the process as having eight phases. This covers the central stages, but some details are inaccurate or less fully reported. The diagram shows flour travelling from a truck into storage silos, rather than being carried from a silo to the factory. It also shows the cups being filled with noodles and vegetables and spices before labelling and sealing; your description says the cups are sealed and labelled, then says they are sealed again. The overview could more clearly summarise the linear progression from raw ingredients to finished cups, while avoiding unsupported label details such as expiry dates and nutritional information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction and overview followed by two chronological paragraphs, so the reader can follow the process from preparation to packaging. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “The newly formed noodle discs,” and “Moving on” help signal progression, and the stages are generally grouped sensibly. Some links are less effective: the overview sentence beginning “Commencing with…” is a fragment, and the final sentence’s “after this” repeats the sealing information rather than advancing the sequence. The transition from the discs being dried to cups being filled could also be made more precise. To strengthen cohesion further, use clear references to each stage and avoid repeating information at the end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “compressed,” “dough sheets,” “cutter,” “dough strips,” “distributed,” and “sealed.” These choices make the manufacturing stages understandable and show some flexibility beyond basic verbs. However, a few expressions are imprecise or not well matched to the diagram: “carried away in a truck from a storage silo” misdescribes the flour’s movement, while “semi cooked” is less natural than a standard process term. “Broken down to noodle discs” is also an awkward collocation, and “basic information” introduces details not shown. Check spelling and word forms, including “thay,” and choose concise, accurate terms for each stage to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex structures, including the relative clause in “a factory where it is mixed” and the sequence describing how sheets are cut into strips. Most of the process remains understandable, but some sentence construction and punctuation errors limit accuracy. “Overall,it is an industrial process and consists of eight phases” needs spacing after the comma, while “Commencing with the mixing of raw materials…” is an incomplete sentence. In “these sheets are passes through a cutter,” the passive verb form is incorrect, and the long final sentence joins several stages with weak punctuation. There are also inconsistent spaces before punctuation. Aim to make each stage a complete sentence and check passive forms, which are especially useful for describing processes.
