IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
To manufacture instant noodles, flour from storage silos is transferred to a mixer where water and oil is added to it and a dough is made. Then, the dough is molded into dough sheets with the help of rollers. After that the dough sheets are changed into dough strips by strips forming machine. The strips are then changed to noodle discs by specific machines. The noodle discs are then cooked well in oil and dryed to make them edible. To acheive a mangeable form, theese are put into specific cups. Vegetables and spices are added to the cup for better flavours. In this way, instant noodles are prepared. After all this processing, the cups are then sealed to keep the noodles hygenic and safe from bugs. Then, these cups are labelled with special company labels. The manufacturing of noodles is completed in this way and sent to shops for selling purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You describe the main production sequence, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, making noodle discs, cooking and drying them, and adding vegetables and spices before sealing and labelling. However, the account does not clearly present an overview of the process as a whole, and some stages are incomplete or imprecise. For example, the diagram shows the cups being filled after cooking and drying, with vegetables and spices added at that stage; your wording makes the order less clear. You also say the product is sent to shops, which is not shown. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview and report only the stages and details visible in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are generally presented in a sensible order, and sequencing phrases such as “Then,” “After that,” and “After all this processing” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, the writing is presented as one continuous paragraph, and repeated transitions make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some references are also unclear: “these” and “In this way” do not always identify precisely which product or stage is meant. Grouping the process into stages—for example, preparation and shaping, followed by cooking and packaging—and using clearer references would improve cohesion while preserving the logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodle discs,” and “sealed,” so the reader can understand the basic manufacturing stages. However, the range is limited by repeated use of general words such as “changed,” “specific machines,” and “in this way.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context, including “molded” for forming sheets and “edible” to describe the cooked noodles. Spelling errors such as “dryed,” “acheive,” “mangeable,” “theese,” and “hygenic” also reduce accuracy. Use more precise process verbs and check spelling carefully to make the description clearer and more appropriate to an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple sentences and longer clauses, and the sequence is mostly understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “The strips are then changed to noodle discs,” but there are errors in agreement and sentence construction. For example, “water and oil is added” should use a plural verb, and “flour from storage silos is transferred to a mixer where water and oil is added to it” has an awkward, unclear reference to “it.” The repeated passive constructions are suitable for a process, but the range remains limited. Varying sentence structures and checking subject–verb agreement and pronoun references would improve accuracy.
