IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles.

Overall, the production of instant noodles includes eight process starting with storage silos and ending qith labelling and sealing.

Firstly, the floor is stored in storage silos before being transported to the mixing machine. Then, it gets mixed with oil and water to make a dough. After this, the dough passes through the roller which then flattened into a dough sheets. These sheets are cut into strips to make a noodle.

With the following steps, the noodles get into the discs shape before it serve into individual cups. In addition to this, we can add different vegetables and spices to enhance the flavour. Finally, the cups are ready with labelling and sealing and are ready to serve to the customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the process as a whole and give a basic overview, noting that it starts with storage and ends with labelling and sealing. However, the overview is not fully accurate: there are eight numbered stages, but the process also includes intermediate steps that need clearer reporting. Several important details are omitted or misrepresented, including cooking the noodle discs in oil, drying them, and the final addition of labels and sealing. The phrase “ready to serve to the customers” is not shown in the diagram. The response also contains only 129 words, below the required 150, which limits how fully you can describe the stages. To improve, cover the complete sequence accurately and avoid adding unsupported information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account using “Firstly,” “Then,” “After this,” and “With the following steps.” This makes the general direction of the process easy to follow. However, the final stages are compressed into a few sentences, and the link between shaping the noodles into discs and placing them in cups is unclear. “In addition to this” does not clearly show the relationship between adding vegetables and spices and the preceding step. Paragraphing is also limited, with the process details presented as one block. Grouping the stages into preparation and packaging, and using more precise links between each stage, would make progression clearer and cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “manufacturing process,” “storage silos,” “mixing machine,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms help communicate the main stages. However, the range is limited, and some word choices or forms are inaccurate: “floor” appears to mean “flour,” “flattened” is not used naturally in “which then flattened,” and “serve into individual cups” does not clearly describe the diagram. “Ready to serve to the customers” is also an unsupported and imprecise description of the finished product. Aim for accurate process verbs such as “is rolled,” “is cut,” “is cooked,” and “is packaged,” and use the diagram’s specific terms consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including “before being transported” and “which then flattened into a dough sheets.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “includes eight process” needs a plural noun, and “ending qith labelling” contains a typing error that disrupts the sentence. In “the dough passes through the roller which then flattened,” the relative clause lacks a clear subject and the verb form is incorrect. “Before it serve” also needs an appropriate verb form, while “a dough sheets” has an article–number mismatch. Practise passive forms for manufacturing processes, such as “the dough is flattened” and “the noodles are placed in cups,” and check agreement and articles.
