IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of making instant noodles.

Overall, the instant noodles making process involves step-by-step industrial process. Starting from flour storage to mechanical to finish product,

To begin with, the process initiated with flour storage silos transported by container to the machinery process which start at mixing. Flour with some water and oil put into the machinery for mixing. The machine than rolled it over by rollers and make it into dough sheets. The followed process make the sheets into dough strips by splitting it.

The next step turns the dough strips to round noddles disc. The raw noodles then went into cooking by oil and fried it until its cooked and dry till it comes out into cups including the vegetables and spices in it. At the end of the process is labelling the finished product and sealed to finally serve it to the shop and for the consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging, and your overview identifies the process as a sequence. The account is generally relevant, but some details are less fully or clearly reported. For example, the diagram shows flour being delivered by truck to silos, whereas “flour storage silos transported by container” makes the relationship unclear. You also say the noodles are fried “until its cooked,” but the diagram specifically shows cooking in oil and drying; the addition of vegetables and spices to cups could be described more precisely. The final claim that the product is sent to shops and consumers is not shown. A more accurate overview and closer reporting of the diagram’s stages would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence, supported by paragraphing and signposts such as “To begin with,” “The next step,” and “At the end.” This makes the process easy to follow, and the stages are mostly grouped in a sensible order. However, cohesion is not always smooth: the overview ends with the fragment “Starting from flour storage to mechanical to finish product,” which interrupts the progression. Some links between stages are also compressed, particularly the move from cooking and drying to the cups and added ingredients. To improve, use complete overview sentences and connect each stage explicitly to the next, while avoiding repetitive sequencing phrases. The organisation is coherent, but these uneven transitions keep the flow from feeling consistently polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixing,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “labelling,” so the reader can identify most stages. However, the range and precision are limited by several awkward or inaccurate choices. “Flour storage silos transported by container” does not clearly express that a truck delivers flour to the silos, while “round noddles disc” is both misspelled and imprecise. Phrases such as “machinery process” and “serve it to the shop and for the consumers” are also unnatural for describing a manufacturing diagram. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “is fed into,” “is shaped into,” and “is packaged,” and check spelling and singular/plural forms. These changes would make the description clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple and more developed sentences, including sequencing clauses such as “The next step turns the dough strips…” and “until its cooked and dry.” However, some grammatical errors affect clarity. The overview contains an incomplete construction: “Starting from flour storage to mechanical to finish product,” and the opening of the process description has faulty structure in “the process initiated with flour storage silos transported by container.” There are also tense and agreement problems, for example “the process initiated” and “the machine than rolled it over … and make it.” Pronoun reference in “until its cooked” is unclear, and the final sentence combines stages without a well-formed parallel structure. Use consistent present simple or passive forms for process descriptions, and check that each sentence has a complete clause.
