IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the eight-stage industrial process of manufacturing instant cup noodles, starting the process from raw flour to fully packed cup noodles for ready to eat.

Overall first, flour is delivered by the truck and store in large container named as ''silos''. It is then moved into a mixer, where it is mixed with oil and water. This mixture passes through heavy rollers that flatten the dough into continuous dough sheets.

In detail, the flat dough sheets are cut into long dough strips. These strips are then partitioned and shaped into a circular noodles disc. After shaping, the noodles disc undergoes into an baking process where it will cooked by oiling the disc and after it dried. This critical process will make the noodles to have a long shelf-life.

In contrast, finally the assembly and packaging phase begins. The dried noodles discs are put into individual cups with addition to vegetables and spices in each container on the top of the noodles so that when the end consumer will open the lid of the cup and pour hot water into the cup then the spices and vegtables will get easily mixed. In the last the packed cups will come under a process where the labelling and sealing is done on the container.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and your overview identifies the process’s starting and finishing points. Details such as adding water and oil, forming dough sheets and strips, and adding vegetables and spices are grounded in the diagram. This meets the task well, though some features are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram shows the noodles being cooked in oil and then dried, rather than an “baking process,” and the cups are filled with noodles and additions before labelling and sealing. The explanation about shelf life and how consumers prepare the noodles goes beyond the visual and takes space from process details. A more concise overview and closer reporting of the diagram’s stages would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a generally logical order, with paragraphs moving from the initial stages to shaping and then packaging. Sequencing expressions such as “In detail,” “After shaping,” and “In the last” help the reader follow the process. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise: “Overall first” combines overview and sequence marking awkwardly, while “In contrast, finally” suggests a comparison that is not present. The final paragraph also combines the diagram’s packaging steps with a lengthy explanation of consumer use, which interrupts the process description. Use a clear overview paragraph followed by stages grouped in sequence, and choose connectors that express time or addition accurately. This would make progression more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “industrial process,” “dough sheets,” “partitioned,” “shelf-life,” and “labelling and sealing.” These choices communicate the general stages, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or unnatural expressions. For example, “undergoes into an baking process” is not an appropriate collocation for cooking in oil, and “fully packed cup noodles for ready to eat” is awkward. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “vegtables,” and repeated use of “process” and “disc.” Aim for precise terms from the diagram and natural collocations, such as “is deep-fried,” “is dried,” and “finished cups are sealed.” This would improve accuracy and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “where” and “so that,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, some errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence construction remain. For example, “flour is delivered by the truck and store” needs a passive verb form, while “where it will cooked” is missing “be.” The phrase “undergoes into an baking process” also has faulty grammatical construction, and “when the end consumer will open” uses an unsuitable tense pattern for a general explanation. Several sentences are long and contain multiple ideas, making these errors more noticeable. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and divide extended sentences into clearer units.
