IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles on a large scale. It shows the each step from raw material to final poduct. As we can see initially flour from storage silos brought up to the mixer where flour turns into dough sheets and then into dough strips, these strips of dough then take shape of noodles disc. Aften then noodles discs are being fried in the cooking oil and then fried discs are dreid. Afer drying and frying spices and vegetables are added the fried noodles and are placed in the packing cups and are seald and packed properly. After preparing the noodles a procees of labelling and branding is next step where packed cups of noodles get their labelling and names with the description. Then they are redy to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence from flour to finished noodle cups, and include several relevant stages, such as mixing, shaping, cooking, adding vegetables and spices, and sealing. However, the account is only partial: it omits the addition of water and oil, the rollers, and the distinct labelling-and-sealing stage is described inaccurately as branding and adding names and descriptions. There is also no clear overview of the process’s main phases. The response contains 133 words, so it does not meet the 150-word minimum. To improve, give a concise overview, report the stages in order, and include the key inputs and finishing steps shown in the diagram without adding unsupported details such as branding or product descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in chronological order, and linking phrases such as “initially,” “then,” and “After” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response some organisation. However, it is written as one long paragraph, and several transitions are repetitive or awkward, including “After preparing the noodles a process of labelling…” The relationship between frying, drying, adding ingredients, and placing the noodles in cups is not always clearly expressed. Group the description into an introduction and overview, followed by logically organised stages, and use precise links such as “Next,” “Following this,” and “Finally” only where they clarify the sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “labelling.” These terms show an attempt to describe the diagram rather than rely entirely on general language. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or repetitive: “fried” is repeated, while “branding,” “names,” and “description” are not supported by the diagram. Spelling errors such as “poduct,” “dreid,” “seald,” and “redy” are noticeable and reduce precision. Use the diagram’s exact labels where possible and choose accurate process verbs, for example “are cooked in oil,” “are dried,” and “are sealed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect several stages in longer sentences, and the reader can usually understand the intended sequence. However, the response relies heavily on simple clauses joined together, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty. For example, “It shows the each step” has an article error, while “flour from storage silos brought up to the mixer” lacks a finite verb and passive auxiliary. The sentence beginning “Afer drying and frying” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the stages. Use consistent passive forms for a process description, such as “The flour is transferred to the mixer,” and check articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
