IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the chain like process of making instant noodles.
Overall, the process consists of several steps and most of them are mechanical which starts with transporting flour. The flour then undergoes different machines until the noodles are packed and labled.
The procedure starts by loading the flour, stored in the storage silos into the flour carrying vehicle which then tranports the flour to noodles manufacturing factories. First step of noodle making is mixing the flour along with water and oil, in a mixer. This converts the flour into dough, following the dough sheets the dough enters another machine which make long stripes of dough.
The dough stripes then enters another machine which converts them to noodles discs, following that those discs enters the cooking oil. After cooking those cooked discs dry and then transfered into cups. Then spices and vegetables are added to those cups which are then sent to lableling and sealing machine. After compeletion of labeling and sealing, instant noodles are ready to sell.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct general order, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, drying, adding ingredients, and sealing. The overview also identifies the process as a sequence of mostly mechanical steps, which gives the reader a useful summary. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the flour is transported from the silos to the factory, not loaded into the silos from a vehicle, and the diagram shows the noodles entering an oil-cooking and drying stage before cups are filled. The account also omits the rollers and the formation of dough sheets, and the final addition of labels is not clearly reported. Including these details would make the coverage more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an overview followed by the stages from flour delivery to the finished product. Linking expressions such as “The procedure starts,” “following that,” and “After” help show progression. The paragraphing is also appropriate for separating the overview from the detailed account. At times, however, the links feel repetitive or the references are unclear: “those discs” and “those cups” require the reader to infer exactly which stage is being described. The long final paragraph also compresses several distinct stages. Use clearer stage-to-stage transitions and divide the description into two process sections, such as preparation and packaging, to make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough,” “noodles discs,” and “labeling and sealing,” so the manufacturing sequence is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “chain like process.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, including “flour carrying vehicle,” “long stripes of dough,” and “cooking oil” where the diagram indicates cooking in oil. Spelling errors such as “tranports,” “labled,” and “compeletion” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard process collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “flour is transported,” “dough strips,” and “cooked in oil.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the flour, stored in the storage silos into the flour carrying vehicle which then…” and a sequence of clauses describing later stages. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or poorly controlled. For instance, “The procedure starts by loading the flour, stored in the storage silos into…” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the flour and the vehicle, while “following the dough sheets the dough enters another machine which make…” has faulty clause structure and subject–verb agreement. There are also errors in plural agreement, as in “those discs enters.” Use shorter, complete clauses and check agreement and tense consistency when describing each stage.
