IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given picture illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles. Overall, complete process comprises of 8 distinct stages begining from the storage silos to ending with labelling and sealing.
The initial step begins with the storage silos being fillled by the flour container, followed by the next stage involves mixing of water and oil ingrediants in a mixer and that paste passes as dough sheets via huge rollers. These dough sheets are converted into dough strips and transformed into noodles discs.
Noodles discs are cooked in hot oil and then kept for drying, however dried noodles are fed into numerous cups. Some processed vegetables and spices are added into cups and the procedure ends with labelling and sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, to adding vegetables and spices and sealing the cups. However, the account is only partial: it omits the final product emerging on a conveyor and gives little detail about the rollers and the transition from dough strips to noodle discs. The overview says there are eight stages, but the description does not clearly report the full sequence, and “flour container” misidentifies the truck that supplies the silos. The response is also 32 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail provided. To improve, describe each major stage accurately and add a fuller overview of how the raw ingredients become packaged cups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs describing the early and later stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, with links such as “followed by,” “then,” and “however.” This logical progression supports the reader, although the linking is somewhat mechanical and “however” does not express a contrast between cooking/drying and filling the cups. Some stage transitions are compressed—for example, dough sheets, strips and discs are mentioned in one sentence—so the process is not always developed clearly. Use paragraphing to separate the preparation and packaging stages, and choose connectors that show sequence rather than contrast. More explicit transitions would make the progression smoother and less dependent on a list-like chain.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelling and sealing,” which helps convey the main stages. There is some range in phrases such as “transformed into” and “processed vegetables and spices.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “flour container” does not describe the truck, “ingredients” is misspelled, and “noodles discs” is not a natural form. “Huge rollers” is imprecise for a process description, while “kept for drying” is less idiomatic than a direct process verb. Aim for precise, natural terms such as “flour is transported,” “noodle discs,” and “large rollers,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a passive construction in “Noodles discs are cooked in hot oil” and a sequence joined with “followed by.” The main stages remain understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “complete process comprises of 8 distinct stages begining” has an omitted article and an incorrect verb pattern, and “the next stage involves mixing … and that paste passes” joins clauses awkwardly. “The storage silos being fillled” also has an incorrect participle form. Use accurate passive forms consistently and check agreement and clause structure; for instance, “The process comprises eight stages, beginning with flour storage” is a clearer model. Vary sentence patterns, but prioritise complete, well-formed clauses.
