IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram demonstrates making of instant noodles. Overall, this manfacturing include eight important steps.
Now turning to the details, first of all flour is stored into the first part called storage silos and then in the second step flour is transfered into the mixer where it get mix with water and oil. Furthermore, in the third step the dough went through rollers and become dough sheets and in the next step the dough sheets turned into dough strips. Moreover, these noodles strips become noodles discs in the step number 5. Up next, in the 6th step noodles discs are fried in cooking oil and then dried and then the cooked and dried nooodles discs are added into cups including vegetables and spices in the step number 7. Lastly, the cups of instant noodles with all its components are labelled and then sealed in the 8th step.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You describe the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and your overview correctly identifies eight steps. However, the overview is very brief and does not summarise the process as a whole beyond its number of stages. Some details are unclear or incomplete: the diagram shows the dough passing through rollers to form sheets, then strips and noodle discs, while your account compresses these transitions. You also say the cups are labelled and sealed, but omit that vegetables and spices are added as the noodles enter the cups. The response is four words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to report the process fully. Add a fuller overview and clarify the key transformations and additions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: a short introduction and overview are followed by the stages in sequence. Time and sequence markers such as “first of all,” “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” “Up next” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the process. However, the repeated step-by-step transitions make the account somewhat mechanical, and several stages are packed into one long paragraph. The repeated use of “step” and “then” also makes connections less varied. Grouping the stages into two paragraphs—for example, preparation and shaping, followed by cooking and packaging—and using clearer links between related actions would improve progression. The reference in “all its components” is also not fully precise, since the cups contain noodles, vegetables and spices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelled and sealed.” This gives the reader a workable account of the manufacturing stages. However, the range of verbs is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “making of instant noodles,” “flour is stored into,” and “become noodles discs” do not express the process naturally. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “manfacturing,” “transfered,” and “nooodles.” Use more precise process verbs and check spelling carefully; for example, “is conveyed to,” “is shaped into,” and “is packaged” would make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the passive voice is appropriate for describing a manufacturing process, as in “are labelled and then sealed.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “this manfacturing include” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “it get mix” and “the dough went through rollers and become” contain faulty verb forms and inconsistent tense. Articles and number are also sometimes unclear in “in the step number 5” and “with all its components.” Aim to use the present simple passive consistently: “the flour is transferred,” “the dough is rolled,” and “the discs are placed in cups.” This will improve accuracy while preserving your clear sequence.
