IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the complete process of noodles manufaturing, from raw material to packaging.

Overall, the manufacturing of noodles involves the complete 8-step procedure. It starts from mixing of raw material (flour, water and oil) before it undergoes several steps and the final product is packaged, labelled and sealed.

First of all, flour is stored in stroge silas. In a mixer, it is mixed with water and oil. This mixture then passes through rollers to make dough sheets. In 4th step, these dough sheets are converted into dough strips, which are then further converted into noodles discs.

These noodles discs are cooked in oil and dried before they are placed in the cups. In 7th step, vegetables and spices also known as tastemakers are added in these cups. In final step, these labelling and sealing of these cups is done, ready to dispatch.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a sequence from raw ingredients to packaged noodles, and your overview captures the main starting and finishing points. Several key stages are also reported accurately, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, and cooking and drying the noodle discs. However, the account is incomplete: it does not clearly describe the rollers’ role in shaping the dough, and the final stages are compressed, with the addition of vegetables and spices and the labelling and sealing process not fully explained. The claim that this is an “8-step procedure” is also unclear against the diagram’s numbered stages. The response is 142 words, below the required 150, so add a little more precise process detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall order: an introduction and overview are followed by the early production stages and then the later packaging stages. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “In 4th step,” and “In final step” help the reader follow the process. The paragraphing is also appropriate for a short process description. However, some links feel mechanical, and the final paragraph moves quickly from cooking to cup filling and packaging without clearly showing how the stages connect. References such as “these cups” are understandable but could be more precise. To improve progression, group the stages into dough preparation, noodle shaping and cooking, and final assembly, using transitions that show how each stage leads to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “raw material,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelled and sealed.” This gives the response an adequate range for describing the diagram. However, several spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “manufaturing,” “stroge silas,” and “tastemakers” are inaccurate, while “these labelling and sealing of these cups is done” is an awkward expression. “Stored in storage silos” would also be more precise than the current misspelling. Aim to use standard process collocations and check spelling carefully. More exact verbs such as “are shaped into,” “are cooked,” and “are sealed” would make the description clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more complex structures, for example, “This mixture then passes through rollers to make dough sheets” and the relative clause in “dough strips, which are then further converted into noodles discs.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “it is mixed with water and oil,” the pronoun’s reference is not fully clear; “the flour” would be more precise. The phrase “In final step” needs an article, and “these labelling and sealing … is done” has a faulty noun phrase and agreement. There is also inconsistent use of articles and sentence punctuation. Use passive forms consistently for the manufacturing stages and check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
