IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrate the process of noodles in factory. Which machine system and products use to make a proper noodles and their shape.
Overall, in this process noodles make through heating and dyring products to do a perfect noodle shape. At the end lable the packet of noodles.
Initially, truck load a flour from storage silos and take to the factory. In factory, flour put in to the mixing machine and add substance like water and oil for knead the dough. After that, with help of rollers that attach with maxing machine flat the knead dough in the form of sheet and cut the strips with the help of cutter. Moreover, strips convert in a round shape discs for cooking using oil to make crispy. Then, add in pot for addition of vegetables and required spices to enhance the taste of noodles. Atlast, filled pot sealed with machine and start lableling to provide information about flavour and spices which are use in it. That pots store in garage and supply in bakery and shop.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You describe the main sequence from flour and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding flavourings, and sealing, so the response is relevant and includes several key stages. However, some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the flour is delivered from a truck into the storage silos, rather than being loaded from the silos by the truck; the diagram shows cups being filled and labelled, not pots stored in a garage or supplied to shops. The overview also focuses on making a “perfect noodle shape” rather than summarising the process as a whole. To strengthen the report, give a concise overview of the full production line and describe only stages shown, including the final packaged cups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account beginning with “Initially” and continuing through later stages. This makes the general progression understandable. However, the opening is fragmented (“Which machine system and products use to make a proper noodles and their shape”), and some links between stages are unclear. For example, “Then, add in pot” does not clearly identify what is added or how the cups enter the process. The final claims about storage and distribution also interrupt the diagram’s sequence. Use complete sentences, group the stages into clear production phases, and use references such as “the dough” and “the cups” consistently so readers can follow each item.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “mixing machine,” “rollers,” “sheet,” “strips,” “discs,” and “sealed,” which helps communicate the manufacturing stages. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram, such as “pot” for the cups, “garage” for an unshown storage area, and “proper noodles.” Spelling errors including “dyring,” “lable,” and “maxing” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate process terms and natural collocations rather than adding details not shown. For instance, describe noodles as being “dried,” cups as being “filled,” and the finished product as “labelled and sealed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe a sequence using both simple sentences and longer clauses, including “After that, with help of rollers…” and “Atlast, filled pot sealed with machine…”. However, many sentences contain errors in sentence formation, verb forms, articles, or agreement, which sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. The opening “The diagram illustrate…” has subject–verb disagreement, while “Which machine system…” is an incomplete sentence. Passive forms are especially useful for process descriptions, but they need accurate construction: for example, “the flour is mixed with water and oil” and “the cups are then labelled and sealed.” Practise complete sentences and consistent present-simple passive forms, checking articles and plural nouns.
