IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates that how instant noodles are manufactured.
Overall, it is linear and man made process. It has several steps, starting with storing of flour, passing it through conveyer belt, and at the end labelling and sealing of noodle cups.
It initializes with storage silos from where flour is taken and sfited to mixer, where water and oil is added in it. Subsquently, with the help of rollers dough sheets were transformed into dough strips. It furtuer shaped them in noodle discs.
When the noodles got into a specific shape, it is cooked and dryed on processing machine. Afterwards they are shifted to designated cups, where special sort of vegetables and spices were added. Then it furthur move towards next step of branding. Labelling of cups, and sealing of cups so that they can be preserved. They are transported to their destination when someone ordered it for their store.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and give a relevant overview, noting that it begins with flour storage and ends with labelling and sealing. Most central stages are included: mixing, shaping the dough, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough is not described as being “shifted” to the mixer, and the diagram shows the noodles entering cups as vegetables and spices are added, rather than being shifted to cups afterwards. The final claim that the product is transported when someone orders it is not shown in the diagram. To make the account more complete and precise, report the stages in the diagram’s order and avoid adding unsupported information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an overview followed by two paragraphs describing the process, and the stages generally progress from beginning to end. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “Afterwards,” and “Then” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “It furthur shaped them” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to, and “Then it furthur move towards next step” leaves the subject uncertain. The overview also says the flour passes through a conveyor belt, which does not clearly connect to the later description. Use explicit subjects such as “The dough strips are then formed into noodle discs,” and group related stages so each transition is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “noodle discs,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms help communicate the main stages. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unsuitable for a manufacturing description, such as “initializes,” “specific shape,” “designated cups,” and “branding.” Spelling errors, including “sfited,” “Subsquently,” “furtuer,” and “dryed,” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise process verbs and check spelling carefully; for example, describe noodles as being “formed into discs” and cups as being “filled with vegetables and spices.” This would make the vocabulary more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “storage silos from where flour is taken” and a sequence of clauses describing later stages. The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “illustrates that how” uses an unnecessary “that,” while “water and oil is added” has subject–verb disagreement. Tense and passive forms are also inconsistent: “dough sheets were transformed” shifts to past tense, and “it furthur move” lacks the correct verb form. Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “it is linear and man made process.” Use the present simple passive consistently for this process, and check agreement and articles in each sentence.
