IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the various steps involved in the commercial manufacturing of instant noodles. The manufacturing process is entirely automated and consists of about eight steps. Beginning with raw flour and ending with the final product.
The eight steps involves linear automation and at each step of the way accuracy plays a vital role. The mixing of water + oil has to be accurate for the dough sheets to soft and perfect. Similarly, the same goes for all the eight steps.
Firstly, the raw flour is transported via truck and then stored in the storage silos, that way the backup for the raw material of flour is always available. The flour then goes through the mixer where water and oil is mixed with flour. The mixture of these 3 material is then put through rollers to produce dough sheets. The dough is passed through a cutter to create dough strips.
Secondly, dough strips are then molded inwards to create a noodles discs. The crispiness of the noodles is because of the noodles discs being cooked in oil and then dried afterwards. Finally, they are put into cups along with the vegetables and spices for the sealing and packaging.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as commercial noodle production and give a broadly accurate sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying. The overview that it has about eight steps and moves from raw flour to a finished product is relevant. However, some important stages are not fully reported: the diagram shows the noodles entering cups, vegetables and spices being added, and the cups then being labelled and sealed before the finished product emerges. Your ending compresses these into “sealing and packaging,” so the final sequence is unclear. The comments about accuracy, a “backup” of flour, and crispiness are not shown in the diagram. Focus the overview and details on observable stages, and report the final packaging steps explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable progression, and the paragraphs move from an introduction to early production and then later stages. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “then,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the second paragraph about accuracy interrupts the chronological account rather than advancing it. “The eight steps involves linear automation” also repeats the introduction without adding useful process information. The final sentence combines adding ingredients, placing noodles in cups, sealing and packaging, making the order difficult to follow. Organise the body into clear chronological stages and use linking phrases to show how each product moves to the next stage.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “transported,” “stored,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” and “dough strips,” which makes most stages recognisable. Some less precise or unnatural choices limit clarity: “molded inwards” does not clearly describe the strips being formed into noodle discs, while “backup for the raw material” adds an unsupported idea. “Crispiness” is also an interpretation rather than a neutral description of cooking and drying. There are a few awkward collocations, such as “a noodles discs” and “the mixture of these 3 material.” Choose precise, diagram-based verbs such as “formed,” “cooked,” “dried,” and “sealed,” and avoid evaluative claims not supported by the visual.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and most of the process remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. “Beginning with raw flour and ending with the final product” is a sentence fragment, and “The eight steps involves” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “for the dough sheets to soft,” the infinitive construction is incomplete; “to become soft” would be grammatical. There are also agreement and number problems in “water and oil is mixed” and “these 3 material,” as well as the article and plural error in “a noodles discs.” Use complete sentences, check singular–plural agreement, and review articles and verb forms. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
