IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram below illustrates the sequential stages involved in the production of instant noodles.

Overall, it is clear that this is a linear process, consisting on 8 different stages. The process starting with the storage of the flour and ending with labelling and sealing the instant noodles.

In the initial stage, the storage silos collect the flour from the truck containers. Following this, added the flour into the mixer, this mixer contained with water and oil and smoothly combined togather in a mixer container. After that the mixture of flour, water and oil formed into a smooth dough sheets with the help of roller and then these sheets cut into thin strips to.

In the next stage, the strips were tranferres to a noodles disk. In this step, noodles discs cooked with oil and then dried with heating. Subsequently, added vegatable and spices into the cups of instant noodles. Lastly, these cups sealed and labelled and ready to sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging, and your overview correctly identifies a linear process. The account is relevant and generally understandable. However, the overview says there are eight stages without clearly distinguishing the numbered stages from the intervening shaping steps, and it describes the endpoint as labelling and sealing rather than explicitly noting that finished cups emerge on a conveyor. Some details are also unclear or incomplete: the dough strips are not clearly described as being formed into noodle discs before cooking, and the addition of vegetables and spices is presented as occurring “into the cups” without explaining that the noodles enter the cups at this point. More precise reporting of these transitions would make the coverage fuller and clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in chronological order, with “In the initial stage,” “Following this,” “In the next stage,” and “Lastly” guiding the reader. This gives the process a coherent progression. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the sequence becomes harder to follow where sentences are incomplete or ideas are compressed together, particularly “Following this, added the flour into the mixer” and the description of the dough sheets and strips. The overview also repeats the endpoint rather than summarising the main transformation from flour to packaged noodles. Use complete, clearly connected sentences and vary the transitions so that each stage follows naturally from the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “production,” “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms help communicate the diagram’s subject, and the meaning is usually recoverable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “truck containers” is not the diagram’s wording, “noodles disk” is unclear, and “ready to sale” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “togather,” “tranferres,” and “vegatable” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling; for example, describe the noodles as discs and say the cups are ready for sale. This would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to use both simple and more developed structures, including the overview clause “consisting on 8 different stages” and the sequence “After that the mixture … formed into…” However, sentence control is inconsistent, and several clauses are incomplete or incorrectly formed. “The process starting with the storage…” lacks a finite verb, while “Following this, added the flour…” has no clear subject. The phrase “this mixer contained with water and oil” also has an incorrect verb pattern, and “these sheets cut into thin strips” omits the passive auxiliary. These errors sometimes make the process difficult to follow. Practise complete passive constructions, such as “The flour is added to the mixer” and “The sheets are cut into strips,” while retaining some varied sentence structures.
