IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration shows us information about how instant noodles are manufactured. Overall, there are 8 stages of making instant noodles. Furthermore, the process of making instant noodles starts when flour from truck is tranfered in the storage silos and ends up labelling plus sealing of noodles cup.
Firstly, flour from truck is stored in silos and then the flour next came to the mixer, where water and oil is mixed into the floor which helps in converting it into the dough form. Moreover, dough sheets are ready after mixing and then they are cutt in a dough strips.
Secondly, dough strips are transferred into noodles discs where cooking with oil is done and after that drying method is performed. In addition, then they are then shifted in a instant noodles cups where vegetables and spices are added into the cups. In the last stage cups are labeled and sealed and then they are ready to eat for customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having eight stages and give a clear start and end point, while covering the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and sealing. This addresses the task, and the stages are generally relevant. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough strips do not themselves become noodle discs; they pass through rollers and are formed into discs. The account also says the cups are ready to eat, which is not shown, and it omits the final movement of the sealed cups along the conveyor. To strengthen the report, describe the transformations and sequence more precisely and include a concise overview of the complete process.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has an overall chronological arrangement, and the paragraph break plus markers such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In the last stage” help the reader follow the process. The opening overview also gives the reader a useful sense of the sequence. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear: “Moreover” and “In addition” do not always signal a meaningful relationship, and “then they are then shifted” repeats a connector. The second paragraph also compresses several stages into one sentence, making the transition from forming discs to cooking and adding ingredients less clear. Use fewer, more precise linking expressions and group the stages into clear sections, such as preparation and packaging.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “vegetables and spices,” and “labeled and sealed.” This gives you an adequate range for describing the diagram. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward, such as “mixed into the floor” for flour, “transferred into noodles discs,” and “a instant noodles cups.” There are also spelling errors in “tranfered” and “cutt,” and repeated use of “then” limits variety. Choose precise verbs for each transformation and check spelling and collocations. For example, say that the strips are shaped into discs, rather than suggesting they are transferred directly into them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the mixer, where water and oil is mixed” and a sequence joined with “and then.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “water and oil is mixed,” and articles and plurals are problematic in “in a instant noodles cups.” The opening sentence also uses an awkward passive construction: “flour from truck is tranfered.” In addition, “they are then shifted” has an unclear pronoun reference. Improve control of agreement, articles, and passive forms, and make sure each pronoun clearly refers to a specific item. These changes would make the process description more accurate and fluent.
