IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The flow chart illustrates how instant noodles are manufactured. There are total 8 steps which begins with storage silos and ends with labelling plus sealing. There are some instructions mention against some steps.
In the very first step we require flour which is stored . After the flour is converted into silos then it goes in the mixture where water and oil are added. Flour is converted to dough sheets in the mixture . Dough sheets are cuted into strips and are converted into noodles discs . Disc are cooked into oil and are kept to dry .
After drying the noodles are pored into cups right after that vegetables and spices are mixed in the cups . Last but not the least cups are sealed and labelled after completing all the process . As soon as the labelling is done they are transported and are ready to cooked at your place

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and give a basic start-to-finish overview, correctly mentioning flour, the addition of water and oil, dough formation, cooking and drying, and final labelling and sealing. However, the account only partially covers the diagram and includes important inaccuracies: flour is stored in silos, not “converted into silos,” and the noodles are not poured into cups before the vegetables and spices are added. The diagram shows the cooked discs entering a vertical section where they and the cups are combined with vegetables and spices. Rollers and the stages of forming sheets, strips and discs also need clearer reporting. The final claim that the cups are transported and ready to cook at home is not shown. Select the main stages accurately and avoid adding unsupported details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence, moving from the initial flour supply through production to packaging, and phrases such as “In the very first step” and “Last but not the least” signal progression. However, the information is arranged in only a few blocks, and the progression is not consistently clear: “After drying the noodles are pored into cups right after that vegetables and spices are mixed in the cups” compresses several stages and misrepresents their relationship. Some linking phrases are awkward or repetitive, while “There are some instructions mention against some steps” does not help organise the description. Group the account into preparation, shaping and cooking, then filling and packaging, using clear links such as “Next” and “Finally” and making each stage’s relationship explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelling,” so the reader can identify much of the subject matter. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “converted into silos,” “mixture” for the machine, “cuted,” and “pored” make parts of the process harder to understand. “Instructions mention against some steps” is also unclear, and “ready to cooked at your place” is not an appropriate description of the diagram. Use precise manufacturing terms and check spelling and collocations; for example, say flour is “stored in silos,” dough is “cut into strips,” and the cups are “sealed and labelled.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer linked sentences, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “There are total 8 steps which begins” has an article omission and subject–verb disagreement; “After the flour is converted into silos then it goes in the mixture” has an unclear clause structure; and “they are ready to cooked” uses the wrong verb form. Several sentences also run stages together without clear punctuation, particularly the sentence beginning “After drying the noodles.” Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the flour is mixed” and “the discs are cooked,” and use shorter sentences where needed to control agreement, articles and verb patterns.
