IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles.
Overall, the process involves eight stages starting with storage flour and ending with labelling and sealing it. The process also provides mixer, dough sheets and strips, noodles discs, cooking plus drying and vegetables plus spices.
The manufacturing process starts when flour is kept in storage silos. The next step is mixing the flour with water and oil in a mixer and then it goes through rollers to dough sheets and strips method. The following step is the noodles discs system where it obtains shape of the noodles.
Following the fifth stage, the next process is cooking the noodles with oil and drying it. After that, vegetables and spices are going to add in cups. Finally, the last stage is labelling and sealing those cups with labels and it becomes ready. That is how instant noodles are being made in factories

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, to adding ingredients and sealing the cups. The overview also recognises the beginning and end of production. However, some stages are reported less fully or unclearly: “dough sheets and strips method” does not clearly explain that the dough is first rolled into sheets and then cut into strips, while the formation of noodle discs is described only as a “system.” The overview’s list of stages is not a clear summary of the main features, and it omits the rollers and the movement of the finished cups along the conveyor. A more precise overview and clearer coverage of the sequence would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible order, with an introduction, an overview and a description that follows the manufacturing sequence. Linking expressions such as “The next step,” “Following the fifth stage,” “After that” and “Finally” help the reader track the process. This clear overall progression is a strength. However, some connections are mechanical, and the overview’s list—“mixer, dough sheets and strips, noodles discs”—does not explain how these features relate. The final sentence, “That is how instant noodles are being made in factories,” repeats the general point rather than adding useful information. To make cohesion more flexible, use links that show sequence and transformation, and make references such as “it” and “those cups” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “cooking,” “drying,” “labelling” and “sealing.” These terms make the general subject clear, and the sequence is understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “storage flour” is not a natural description of the first stage, “dough sheets and strips method” is unclear, and “noodles discs system” does not accurately name the shaping stage. “It obtains shape of the noodles” also expresses the idea awkwardly. Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, such as “the dough is rolled into sheets” and “cut into strips.” This would improve clarity while retaining the relevant vocabulary you already use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a sequence joined with “and then” and the time clause “when flour is kept in storage silos.” The stages can generally be followed, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “vegetables and spices are going to add in cups” needs a passive form (“are added to the cups”), and “it obtains shape” needs an article and a more suitable construction (“it takes the shape…”). Pronoun reference is also unclear in “cooking the noodles with oil and drying it,” since the noun is plural. The overview’s “ending with labelling and sealing it” has a similar reference problem. Use consistent passive forms for this process and check articles, agreement and pronouns; these changes would make the sentences more accurate.
