IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram below depicts a step-by-step process to manufacture instant noodles. It shows 8 steps to produce it.
Overall, the flour is putted into a mixer, which contains oil and water. After going through dough strips, the noodles discs are made and cooked in oil. Then it is putted into cups before adding vegetables and spices. After that, these are labelled and sealed.
The flour is transfered to storage silos from a tanker (1). Then it is putted in a mixer, which has water and oil in it, the mixer sends it to rolllers (2). The dough sheets send the flat flour to dough strips (3). The dough strips shape it into strips (4).
The noodle discs are created (5). They are cooked in oil and dryed before going into cups (6). The spices and vegetables are putted in cups (7). Finally, the cups are sealed and labeled (8).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging. However, the account is not consistently accurate or clear: the overview says the noodles are put into cups before vegetables and spices are added, whereas the diagram shows these ingredients being added as the noodles enter the cup-filling stage. The description of the rollers and the transition from sheets to strips is also difficult to follow, and the overview does not clearly summarise the full progression from raw flour to finished cups. The response is one word below the required minimum. To strengthen the report, give a precise overview and describe each stage in the diagram’s order, including the final labelling and sealing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Then,” “After that” and “Finally” help the reader follow the general process. However, the numbered stages are not consistently aligned with the actual sequence, and the account repeats information from the overview in the body. Some references are unclear, particularly “it” in “the mixer sends it to rollers” and “these” in “these are labelled and sealed.” The progression between dough sheets, strips and discs is also hard to track. Organise the body in uninterrupted chronological order and use specific nouns, such as “the dough” or “the noodle discs,” instead of ambiguous pronouns.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “noodle discs,” and “sealed,” so the reader can identify many of the stages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate: “putted” is repeated, “transfered” and “dryed” are misspelled, and “the flat flour” does not clearly describe dough sheets. Repetition of “putted” and “made” also makes the account less precise. Use standard process verbs such as “is transferred,” “is rolled,” “is cut,” and “is packaged,” and check spelling and collocations. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the material at each stage without changing the basic meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple sentences and longer clauses, for example, “After going through dough strips, the noodles discs are made and cooked in oil.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. “The flour is putted into a mixer” uses an incorrect past participle, and “Then it is putted in a mixer” repeats the same verb-form problem. In “The dough sheets send the flat flour to dough strips,” the subject and action do not form a clear process sentence. There are also awkward shifts between singular and plural references, such as “the noodles discs” followed by “it.” Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and make sure each sentence has a clear subject and matching verb. This will improve control while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
