IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the manufacturing of instant noodles.
So, there are eight steps which are used to make instant noodles.
Overall, the diagram shows all the step from producing instant noodles to send them for local sale.
To begin with, the first step of making noodles is storage of silos where flour is bring and keep in massive storage containers. The second stage is mixer. In this stage water and oil is mixed in flour. Additionally, In third step, the mixture passes through rollers where mixture is converted into a form of dough sheets. These dough sheets keep moving through a conveyor. Then, in next step, dough sheets transformed into dough strips and then noodles discs are made in fifth stage.
Looking at the sixth step, noodles discs keep moving via a conveyor where the process of cookin in oil and drying starts. In addition, the cooked dics of noodles are kept in cups. Moreover, the vegetables and spices are added in these cups in the seventh stage. The other step is labelling plus sealing. In this step, labels are added on cups and then cups are sealed to store for a long period. Eventually, the cups of instant noodles are ready to go to markets and local sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as instant-noodle manufacture and describe its main sequence, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging. The overview also recognises that the diagram presents a series of stages. However, some details are inaccurate or insufficiently developed: the noodles are not placed in cups immediately after cooking; vegetables and spices are added as the cups are filled, and labelling and sealing follow. The claim that the product is prepared “to send them for local sale” and stored “for a long period” is not shown in the diagram. A more precise overview would highlight the transformation from flour into noodle discs and their final packaging, while avoiding unsupported claims about distribution or storage duration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that follow the production stages. Connectors such as “To begin with,” “Then,” and “Eventually” help the reader track the process, and the progression is generally easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation and also shows some features of stronger progression. However, linking phrases are sometimes repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated “In addition” and “Moreover.” Some references are also unclear: “the mixture” and “these cups” require the reader to infer exactly what is being described. Use more precise stage-to-stage links and refer explicitly to the noodles or cups when needed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage containers,” “conveyor,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelling plus sealing.” These terms make the manufacturing sequence understandable, and there are attempts to vary wording with phrases such as “converted into” and “transformed into.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “storage of silos” is not the natural name for the stage, “cookin in oil” is misspelled, and “kept in cups” does not precisely describe the filling stage. “Local sale” and “store for a long period” also introduce meanings not supported by the diagram. Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling, especially in key technical descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “where” and “where the process…starts,” and the sequence remains understandable despite some errors. However, there are several problems with verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “flour is bring and keep” should use passive participles (“is brought and kept”), while “water and oil is mixed” requires plural agreement (“are mixed”). “The mixture passes through rollers where mixture is converted” also needs an article before the second “mixture.” In “the first step…is storage of silos,” the grammatical relationship is unclear. Practise accurate passive forms, which are especially useful for process descriptions, and proofread each sentence for agreement and articles.
