IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram outlines the stages of manufacturing of instant noodles.

overall, the process consists of eight stages, beginning with collecting the floor from the storage silos which is being trasported to the factory and terminating with the process of labelling and sealing of the cup noodles. During the process dough sheets are being stripped then transformed into noodle discs and eventually turning it into cup noodles.

Initially, the floor is loaded and trasported from the storage silos and transported to a factory where the process begins. There, the flour is is grinded in the mixer in which water and oil are added into the mixer. Which are then processed through rollers in order to transform into dough sheets. This dough sheet are then stripped into thin slices making it as dough strips.

In the further steps, the dough strips are shaped into noodles discs, which are dipped into the cooking oil and later it is dried. The next steps include filling of noodles into the cups, which also include vegetables and spices. Finally, the cups go through the process of labeling and sealing. Hence, forming the instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as a sequence and give a relevant overview, noting its start with flour and its end with labelling and sealing. The main stages—mixing, forming sheets and strips, shaping discs, cooking and drying, and adding ingredients—are mostly covered, so the reader can follow the broad production route. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: flour is delivered from a truck to storage silos, rather than being collected from the silos and transported to the factory, and the cups are filled with noodles as well as vegetables and spices. The overview also calls the process eight stages without clearly distinguishing the intermediate steps. To strengthen the account, describe the diagram’s sequence and inputs precisely, including the final cup-filling stage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that move from preparation to packaging. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “In the further steps,” and “Finally” help signal progression, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. Some links are less effective, however. “Which are then processed through rollers” is a sentence fragment, while “Hence, forming the instant noodles” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. Repetition of “the mixer” and “the process” also makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. Use complete sentences and clearer references—for example, “The mixture then passes through rollers”—and group the stages so each transition explicitly connects one product form to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodle discs,” and “labelling and sealing,” which makes the subject recognisable. There is some variety in how stages are described, but word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and occasionally make the meaning less precise. “Floor” is repeatedly used where “flour” is intended, and “stripped” does not accurately describe the dough being cut into strips. Phrases such as “grinded in the mixer” and “filling of noodles into the cups” are also unnatural collocations. Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling carefully; terms such as “ground,” “cut into strips,” and “placed into cups” would communicate the stages more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which” and sequencing phrases, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in sentence construction and verb forms are evident. “Which are then processed through rollers” is a fragment, and “This dough sheet are then stripped” has subject–verb disagreement. The overview’s “beginning with … and terminating with” construction is not well controlled, while “eventually turning it into cup noodles” does not fit smoothly with the preceding clause. There are also awkward tense and passive constructions, such as “are being stripped.” Use consistent present simple passive forms for a process, and check that each sentence has a complete main clause and that subjects agree with their verbs.
