IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the process of making instant noodles.

Overall, the process consists of eight important steps. The process begins when the flour is brought from the storage silos to the manufacturing unit. The flour goes through several stages and then the final products are formed .After perperation ,noodles are then labelled and sealed .

The first step of making instant noodles starts from taking the flour from the storage site to the manufacturing unit.Once the flour reaches the site ,it is mixed with water and oil .Then this batter is placed in to a mixture to make dough sheets.

These dough sheets are then cut into strips on the machine. When the dough strips are ready ,these strips are rolled into disc like shapes .

subsequently, noodles discs are oiled with a cooking oil and dried afterwards. The next step is to transfer these noodles into cups .Then vegetables and spices are added for a rich aroma.Eventually , these cups are labelled and sealed.

This is the last stage of manufacturing instant noodles in a manufacturing unit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, and final packaging, and your overview identifies the beginning and end of the process. The account is generally relevant and understandable. Some details, however, are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram shows rollers forming sheets, strips and discs, while “these strips are rolled into disc like shapes” compresses the stages and does not clearly describe the machinery. The order of adding vegetables and spices and placing the noodles in cups is also unclear in “transfer these noodles into cups. Then vegetables and spices are added.” For a stronger overview, state that this is a linear, multi-stage process and clarify the sequence at the cup-filling stage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in sequence, with a separate closing paragraph. Connectors such as “Then,” “subsequently” and “Eventually” help the reader follow the process. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some references are unclear. For example, “these strips” repeats the previous noun, while “the site” and “the manufacturing unit” do not clearly identify the relevant equipment or location. The overview also repeats the idea of the final product being labelled and sealed, which is then described again at the end. Use more precise references to each stage and vary linking expressions so that the progression feels smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixed,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “cooking oil,” “labelled” and “sealed,” so the reader can understand the general manufacturing sequence. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward for this diagram. “Batter” is not the best term for the mixture that becomes dough, “rolled into disc like shapes” is imprecise, and “oiled with a cooking oil” is an unnatural collocation. There are also spelling and form errors, notably “perperation,” and “rich aroma” adds an unsupported description rather than reporting a process feature. Aim for precise terms such as “dough,” “formed into noodle discs” and “vegetables and spices are added.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including passive constructions such as “These dough sheets are then cut into strips” and a time clause beginning “When the dough strips are ready.” Most stages remain understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. Examples include “it is mixed” after the plural “flour” is treated as the subject, “placed in to a mixture” and the awkward construction “starts from taking the flour.” There are also punctuation and spacing problems, such as missing spaces after commas and the extra space before the full stop in “formed .” Passive voice is appropriate for a process description; check subject–verb agreement, prepositions and sentence punctuation, and proofread each sentence for accuracy.
