IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of production of instant noodles.

Overall, the manufacturing process consists of eight steps starting from storing the ingredients and ending with packaging the cup noodles.

First of all, flour, which is the basic ingredient for making noodles, is kept in storage silos. Afterwards, flour is poured in the mixer alongwith water and oil. Consequently, after mixing the ingredients, the dough is placed on the rollers to turn into dough sheets. In the next stage, dough sheets are passed through dough stripes to cut into the desired shape of noodles.

The dough stripes are then pressed on the noodles disks. Next, cooking oil is added and the noodles are dried before transferring to the cups. Then, vegetables and spices are added in the cups alongwith the noodles. Finally, labels are added and cups are being sealed. The instant noodles are now ready for sending to the market for customers purchase.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear account of the process from flour storage to the finished cups, and your overview correctly identifies eight stages and the overall start and end points. Most key stages are included, including mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, adding seasonings, and sealing. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough sheets are cut into strips by machinery, rather than “passed through dough stripes,” and the strips are formed into noodle discs rather than “pressed on the noodles disks.” The description of the final stages also omits that cups are introduced as the noodles move through the production line. This covers the task well overall, but more precise reporting of the less clearly described stages would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, a concise overview, and a chronological description, so the reader can follow the process from beginning to end. Sequencing expressions such as “First of all,” “Afterwards,” “In the next stage,” and “Finally” help signal progression. The stages are generally grouped sensibly, and the overview gives the reader a useful framework before the details. Some transitions are a little mechanical, however, and “Consequently” does not express the relationship as naturally as a direct sequence marker would. The long final paragraph also moves quickly through several distinct stages. Using clearer links between shaping, cooking, and cup assembly would make the progression more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “ingredients,” and “sealed,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to describe technical stages, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “dough stripes” for dough strips, “noodles disks” for noodle discs, and “pressed on” for the way strips are formed into discs. “Alongwith” is incorrectly written as one word, while “customers purchase” is an awkward phrase for the intended meaning. These issues show that your vocabulary is adequate for the topic but not yet consistently precise in collocation and word form. Prioritise the diagram’s exact labels and practise natural process verbs such as “cut,” “shape,” and “transfer.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “flour, which is the basic ingredient for making noodles,” and the overview sentence describing the process’s start and end. Most sentences communicate the sequence successfully. Some grammatical errors remain: “cups are being sealed” uses an unnecessary progressive form for a general process, and “ready for sending” is an awkward construction; “ready to be sent” would be more appropriate. The phrase “for customers purchase” also lacks the possessive form needed before “purchase.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Continue using varied sentence structures while checking verb forms and possessives, especially in the final sentences.
