IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates how the manufacturing process of instant noodles was carried out.
The manufacturing process consisted of 8 steps and the main ingredient was flour and the final product was served in cups with labels engraved on it.
The flour was transported to storage silos with the help of a vehicle. Then, it was shifted to a mixer and the grinding process was accomplished with the addition of water and oil. Afterwards, the mixture was passed onto dough sheets which took place with the use of rollers. It was then slided through dough strips for baking onto noodle discs. The baking process was initiated with added cooking oil and then allowed it for drying. After that the final product was delivered into cups and additional ingredients was added into it such as vegetables and spices. As this product was ready for serving, it was sent into labelling section for necessary covering and sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having eight steps and give a basic account from flour storage through to labelling and sealing, so the response is relevant and includes several key stages. However, some important details are incomplete or inaccurately described: the noodles are cooked in oil and dried, rather than undergoing “baking,” and the cups are filled with noodles before vegetables and spices are added. The overview also says the final product is served in cups, but does not clearly summarise the transformation from flour into finished, sealed noodle cups. To make the account more complete, report the stages in precise order and distinguish the dough-forming, cooking, and packaging stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the process in a generally logical order, and sequencing expressions such as “Then,” “Afterwards,” and “After that” help the reader follow the stages. The opening overview is separated from the process description, which gives the response a basic structure. However, the account is presented in one long paragraph after the introduction, and the repeated time markers make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some references are also unclear: “It was then slided through dough strips” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to or how the dough sheets become strips. Use clearer stage-to-stage links and paragraphing, and name the material or product at each transition.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “drying,” and “labelling section,” which helps communicate the general sequence. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “the manufacturing process” and “necessary covering and sealing.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram: “grinding process” does not describe mixing, “baking” is not the cooking method shown, and “labels engraved on it” misrepresents the labels. “Slided” is also an incorrect form. Choose precise process verbs and collocations, such as “mixed,” “formed into strips,” “cooked in oil,” and “sealed with labels,” to describe the stages more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “as,” and most of the process remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “the main ingredient was flour and the final product was served” shifts awkwardly between singular and plural ideas, while “additional ingredients was added” has subject–verb disagreement. The construction “then allowed it for drying” is also faulty, and “which took place with the use of rollers” has an unclear grammatical reference. Use direct passive forms consistently—for example, “the mixture is rolled into sheets” and “vegetables and spices are added”—and check agreement and clause structure.
